Weekend Box Office: ‘Doctor Strange’ Mystifies Opening Weekend As Marvel And Disney Have Another Winner

Marvel Studios and Disney are doing a lot of big things and one of them is being able to deliver huge winners in theaters. They have won numerous weekend box office takes in 2016, and it doesn’t seem as if they are showing any signs of slowing down. The domestic box office for the first weekend of November was one that belonged to another new Marvel franchise as Doctor Strange shattered expectations by taking in an estimated $85 million.

It was expected that Doctor Strange would do well, but no one quite expected it to do this well.

As reported by Box Office Mojo, there was a total of 3,882 screens domestically for Doctor Strange and it has already made back close to half of its budget. Well, that is in the domestic box office as it has already opened in a number of international locations and upped its grand total by much more.

According to Coming Soon, Doctor Strange opened in 22 other countries this weekend and brought in an additional $118.7 million. With its combined international total and the opening weekend at the domestic box office, the Marvel film has brought in $325.4 million globally in just 13 days.

Two other films had their opening weekends over the last few days, and they took both the second and third spots. DreamWorks release of Trolls did very well with $45.6 million for an impressive take from a film based on the fluffy-headed toys.

Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake bring big-time star power to Trolls with some humor, family fun, and great music.

Coming in third place is another new movie and it is Hacksaw Ridge which is Mel Gibson’s World War II drama. Andrew Garfield stars as a medic in the United States Army whose strong religious beliefs would not allow him to take arms or even touch a weapon. The drama from Lionsgate ended up bringing in $14.8 million for its opening weekend.

Rounding out the top ten are some of the horror and Halloween-themed movies from October with Boo! A Madea Halloween coming in fourth and Ouija: Origin of Evil taking the eighth spot. Inferno finished out the top five while The Accountant and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back came in sixth and seventh respectively.

Here are the estimated numbers for the top 10 films at the weekend box office for Nov. 4-6, 2016:

1. Doctor Strange – $84.989 million

2. Trolls – $45.6 million

3. Hacksaw Ridge – $14.75 million

4. Boo! A Madea Halloween – $7.8 million

5. Inferno – $6.25 million

6. The Accountant – $5.95 million

7. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back – $5.58 million

8. Ouija: Origin of Evil – $3.98 million

9. The Girl on the Train – $2.77 million

10. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children – $2.1 million

The final numbers are set to be out on Monday and a few changes could happen here and there. Still, it’s not expected at all that Doctor Strange or Trolls will fall out of the top two spots.

As the holiday season truly begins to arrive, it is looking as if Doctor Strange could still dominate the next two weeks before its first real competition arrives. On Nov. 18, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them will hit theaters and bring the world of “Harry Potter” back to life.

Marvel Studios and Disney are really hitting things out of the park at the box office this year, and it is clear that Doctor Strange is going to keep bringing in big numbers. Its opening weekend was huge and came in well above the initial expectations of how things would go. Trolls and Hacksaw Ridge did well in their opening weekends as well, but there was truly no competing with the next big hit fro Marvel.
