November Security Update Available For T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S7 & S7 Edge

T-Mobile is starting to roll out a new firmware update for its variants of Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. According to Sam Mobile, the November security patch is now available for these smartphones.

T-Mobile is reportedly the first U.S. carrier to release the November security update for the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. The firmware is available via Over-the-Air or OTA process. Take note though that it may take a while for certain Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge units to receive the OTA update notification because the rollouts are done in phases. But once a firmware update becomes available, T-Mobile users simply need to follow the on-screen prompts that will appear to commence the download and installation process.

Owners of the standard flat-screen Samsung Galaxy S7 should be getting a firmware with build number G930TUVU4APK1, 82.10 MB in size, while the S7 Edge users should be installing an 81.96MB update carrying the G935TUVU4APK1 version.

The changelog for the T-Mobile’s Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge firmware only mentioned security improvement, which specifically bumps the phone to November 1 security level. But a post on TmoNews cited the possibility that the latest firmware update not only contained the November security patch but it also brought in support for new network technologies, the 256 QAM (for downloads) and 64 QAM (for uploads) capabilities, in particular.

As explained on Wireless Week, “the QAM technology will increase speeds by boosting the number of bits delivered per transmission. ” There was no verification from the Un-carrier yet about the inclusion of these new features, but a recent tweet from T-Mobile CTO Neville Ray disclosed that the update for this is coming “very soon” for the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge units.

The Inquisitr will keep you in the loop once T-Mobile has already released a detailed changelog or an official announcement validating that the latest update rolling out for Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge is indeed adding these new network technologies or if it will be available through another firmware upgrade set to arrive soon.

Update (November 8): For those who are curious to know about the inclusion of the 256 QAM and 64 QAM capabilities in the recent T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge updates, here’s an email from a Qualcomm representative:

“I represent Qualcomm and wanted to confirm that this update does indeed include the upgrade to 256QAM downloads and 64QAM uploads, which are enabled by the Qualcomm Snapdragon X12 LTE modem built inside. Not sure why it wasn’t included in the official documentation, but it for sure is included in the actual update itself.”

Meanwhile, here’s a video of T-Mobile CEO responding to Verizon’s latest TV commercial attacking the Un-carrier.

In addition to the monthly security maintenance updates expected to arrive for Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, T-Mobile has previously confirmed that these 2016 flagships will also receive Google’s latest mobile OS iteration, the Android 7.0 Nougat. The highly-awaited major firmware upgrade is set to bring in new Android features such as the multi-window view, enhanced Doze, Multi-locale language settings, support for Vulkan, Virtual Reality mode and a lot more. T-Mobile-branded Samsung Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge Plus are expecting the Android Nougat as well.

As for other T-Mobile news, the US carrier recently rolled out an update specifically for Samsung Galaxy Note 7 owners. Those who are still using the fire-prone phablet and haven’t exchanged it yet should receive a firmware update limiting the battery charging capacity to 60 percent. After the update, T-Mobile Note 7 users can also expect the recall pop-up notifications to show up more often. “Battery indicator color is changing to grey,” the changelog posted on T-Mobile’s support page also specified.

Meanwhile, before the arrival of the latest Android security patch for T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, Blackberry has already released it to Priv smartphones. The update weighs in 98 MB and rolled out by the Canadian company to all units except the Verizon variant, which recently received the Android Marshmallow OS. Blackberry noted the following, cited by GSM Arena.

Today’s update brings news that AAH505, our candidate to be the official November security patch update, is now available to beta participants on all devices (except Verizon variants) to begin testing. Depending on the build you’re coming from, this will either be a relatively small patch download or a very large full download.”

Blackberry Priv users who are not able to install the November security patch yet can open up their phone’s dialer and type in *#*#CHECKIN#*#* to check for the firmware update’s availability again.
