Congressman’s Heckling Of Obama Prompts Twitter Rage, Downs Official Website

joe wilson heckles obama

A Republican congressman’s heckling of President Barack Obama as he addressed a joint session of Congress Wednesday night is making the healthcare debate even more acrimonious. Rep. Joe Wilson’s (R-SC) “You lie!” outburst became a top topic on Twitter, and a deluge of visits has caused the Republican lawmaker’s official House Website to crash.
Obama was speaking about illegal immigration when Wilson shouted the phrase while pointing a finger at the President. The gesture was met by a stream of tweets condemning the congressman as a “jerk” and “bumbling idiot,” as well as supporting him for “speaking the truth.” Wilson’s Wikipedia entry was also suddenly locked “due to vandalism,” while his official Website inaccessible and “down for maintenance.”
Rep. Steve Israel (D-NY) had criticized Wilson’s action “shameful,” while Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) had called for the congressman to apologize.
The chair of the South Carolina Democratic Party, Carol Fowler, lamented, “Once again a South Carolina Republican has embarrassed our state,” referring to embattled Gov. Mark Sanford’s admission of an extramarital affair.
“Never has any member of Congress shown such disrespect for the president during a speech,” she added. “One would think that as a member of the military, Joe Wilson would have more respect and patriotism than he displayed tonight.”
The 62-year-old Wilson, a former state senator and U.S. Energy Department deputy general counsel during the Reagan administration, has released a statement saying he regrets for letting his emotions get the better of him.
