Microsoft Surface Pro 4 Gets Major Challenge From Lenovo Miix 720

The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 is still the ultimate laptop/tablet hybrid. It’s a device that Tech Radar says is iterative in the best sense.

“Has Microsoft at last crafted a tablet that can reasonably, without considerable compromise, replace your laptop? Short of going back to the drawing board on the battery, this looks as close as it’s going to get.”

The review especially praises the Surface Pro 4’s screen, the vastly improved Type Cover, and the improved Surface Pen. The only major criticism is the battery life, which a lot of others have complained about.

There have been many Surface Pro 4 clones to hit the market recently, but the Lenovo Miix 720 may finally be the one that stands up strong to the Surface Pro 4. iTech Post has the news.

“The Mixx 720 features Intel’s latest Kaby Lake processor available in i3, i5 or i7 configurations (2.4 to 3.5 GHz with turbo boost), 4-16 GB RAM, 128 to 1024 GB storage, a 12 inch high-resolution 3:2 2880×1920 pixel display with Gorilla Glass 4, multiple USB ports, a stylus with 2048 pressure levels and Windows Hello via an iris scanning infra-red camera.”

The article adds that a keyboard cover with a backlight will also be available. It will also come in both gold and black versions. The Verge isn’t sure when the Miix 720 will be released.

“We still don’t know when the Miix 720 will release, or how much it will cost, but with this much information already leaked out, it probably won’t be too long before an official unveiling from Lenovo,” says columnist Chaim Gartenberg.

There is certainly some excitement for Lenovo’s new device on Twitter.

Lenovo recently released another device called the Yoga Book, which some said was a Surface Pro killer — at least for the very low-end version. The Verge was one of the first sites to report on the device.

“But Lenovo, which has made a bunch of these convertible creations, has come up with something that not only makes sense, but nudges the category forward with a completely new kind of keyboard. It’s called the Yoga Book, and it’s an incredibly thin and light tablet-like machine with a flat, touch-sensitive surface that lights up into a glowing keyboard.”

The article added that the lower panel on the Yoga Book also doubles as a Wacom digitizer surface, which means you can use a stylus pen to draw on it as well. Although critic Lauren Goode is fascinated with the device, she says the keyboard comes with a learning curve. Engadget wasn’t as impressed.

The Lenovo Yoga Book, available in Android ($500) and Windows ($550) versions, is inventive. But Lenovo claims that the Yoga Book is the ‘ultimate tablet for productivity and creativity,’ and that’s where the company is wrong,” claimed columnist Cherlynn Low, adding that there are many well-intended elements such as multi-window support, but these enhancements never truly add up to anything productive.

Those who aren’t fans of Microsoft or Lenovo and want a laptop/tablet hybrid might want to wait until the release of the next MacBook. According to iTech Post, the design of the 2017 MacBook will be different in terms of color options. But the biggest difference is that Apple may add pencil support on the MacBook. Apple fans have been waiting for digital inking support on an OS X device for years, even though Steve Jobs was against it.

If you need a laptop/tablet hybrid and can’t wait for the MacBook, the Lenovo Miix 720 or the Surface Pro 4 may be your best choice. But if you can just hold on a little longer, the Surface Pro 5 and the updated MacBook should be released next spring.
