Research Links Common STD With Prostate Cancer

Boston, MA (AHN) – New research indicates a strong link between a common sexually transmitted disease and aggressive prostate cancer.

Researchers with the Harvard School of Public Health and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital said the infection, trichomonas vaginalis infects about 174 million people globally every year, and is the most common non-viral STD.

The disease can infect the prostate and be a source of inflammation, the researchers said in a statement. Inflammation of the prostate is a potential risk factor for cancer. The scientists said that about three quarters of men infected with trichomonas vaginalis may not know they have it because they may not have any symptoms.

The study appears in the Sept. 9 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
