Jenyer Soloist Debut: Former K-Pop Idol Of Disbanded CUBE Entertainment Girl Group 4Minute Ranks High Internationally With ‘Day And Night’ [Video]

The year 2016 has been a year in which K-pop fans’ emotions have been pulled in all different kinds of directions. In one moment, they are on cloud nine with all the awesome debuts of new K-pop acts, such as Astro, NCT, and Black Pink. The next moment, they feel as if they are trudging aimlessly through a bottomless pit with members leaving established K-pop acts or of acts disbanding.

Probably the most heartbreaking moment of 2016 for K-pop fans was when 4Minute disbanded. It seemed as if the veteran K-pop girl group created under Cube Entertainment found a second life with “Hate,” a song that was well-received among international K-pop fans. Unfortunately, iHQ — the majority stockholder of Cube Entertainment — did not think 4Minute was profitable enough, resulting in them forcing Jihyun, Gayoon, Jiyoon, Hyuna, and Sohyun to disband.

Some of the members of 4Minute have moved on to other endeavors since then. Hyuna was the only member to not leave Cube Entertainment, continuing her solo career with them with her latest K-pop comeback, her fifth EP titled A’wesome. Sohyun has done some charity work by selling her 4Minute props at Jang Wook Hyuk’s “Back To The Market” event. Gayoon will pursue an acting career. We do not know what Jihyun will do next.

As for Jiyoon, she will be pursuing a solo career in music under a new stage name, Jenyer. Just recently, she released her debut album, Day and Night, with its featured title track “I Do.” Reportedly, it is doing very well with international K-pop fans.

Jeon Ji Yoon made her debut on November 2, with a debut album and her new stage name, Jenyer, as reported by Soompi. The title track, “I Do,” was personally written and produced by Jenyer herself, and it showcases her vocal abilities. The message of the song is very beautiful as she sings of always shining down on those she cares about while taking away all the sadness and pain so they only feel happiness. This message might be indirectly pointed to 4Nia (official fan club for 4Minute) who suffered the most after the abrupt disbanding of 4Minute. There is also a hip-hop song titled “Magnet,” which features Korean rapper Olltii.

At this moment, the numbers for Jenyer’s debut are still being tallied up, but we do know that her debut album is doing very well overseas. According to AllKpop, Day and Night is very popular in certain countries outside of South Korea. It is No. 1 on iTunes Vietnam’s Top Albums Chart and No. 3 in Hungary.

Many K-pop fans, especially those who are 4Nia, are crying tears of joy over Jenyer’s success as a solo artist. It was unknown just how well the four former members of 4Minute who did not re-sign with Cube Entertainment would do. Despite “Hate,” the title track for their last album, an EP titled Act. 7, being one of the catchiest K-pop songs ever performed, it did not do well in sales, domestically. Apparently, the inclusion of dubstep by Skrillex producing and a feature by The Fine Brothers was not enough to save it.

At this moment, only half of the members seem to have solo career endeavors after 4Minute. Yet if Jenyer was able to gain such momentum and traction among the K-pop community with her solo debut through an entertainment company and agency (JS E&M) known more for representing actors, there is hope for the other three.

Jenyer’s debut album, Day and Night, is available in both digital and hard copy. Unfortunately, the latter is not available internationally. However, the last two EPs by 4Minute, Crazy and Act. 7, are still on sale on YesAsia.
