Brown University swears that the Dalai Lama didn’t drop the f-bomb at a recent speaking engagement on campus even though the closed-captioning shown with the live video said otherwise.

The revered exiled Tibetan spiritual leader was encouraging listeners on Wednesday night to share his thoughts and perspectives with the people in their lives if they find what the Dalai Lama has to say interesting. Of course, if the Dalai Lama failed to make such an impression, he advised his listeners to “forget it.”

I think you see where this is going.

Whoever was transcribing His Holiness’s words for closed captioning made a huge mistake, mis-hearing the word “forget”  for a particularly strong profanity, reports NBC News. Owing to the Dalai Lama’s thick accent and the stenographer’s mistake, the quote was transcribed for the large screen as saying if there’s “not much interest, then f— it.”

Some in attendance at the Rhode Island Convention Center also thought that the Dalai Lama had uttered the four-letter profanity due to his strong accent, so we guess it was an honest mistake on the part of the stenographer. Brown University reached out today to reassure everyone that the Dalai Lama did not drop the f-bomb in front of thousands of people and that is was an unfortunate mistake.
