‘Sons Of Anarchy’ Creator Possibly Teased Charlie Hunnam’s Return As Jax Teller In Spin-Off

Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter continues to drop hints about what fans might expect to see out of his latest project. If one of his social media posts is any indication, the return of fan-favorite Charlie Hunnam reprising his role as Jackson “Jax” Teller could be in the plans for the upcoming Sons of Anarchy spin-off.

ComicBook recently reported the potential reunion between Charlie Hunnam and Kurt Sutter on Mayans MC, the working title of the Sons of Anarchy spin-off. Referencing a cryptic Instagram post showing both Charlie Hunnam and Emilio Rivera (who played Marcus Alvarez in Sons of Anarchy), the website speculated that Jax Teller could play a part in the upcoming spin-off.

Fans of Sons of Anarchy were originally bummed when Charlie Hunnam told the audience at the San Diego Comic-Con that he did not believe he would be involved in the series, Entertainment Tonight explained. Charlie Hunnam thought the new series would focus on the Mayans and be a story about the origin of the American motorcycle club culture that took place in early 1950s and 1960s.

“I don’t think I’m a part of it, because [my character] wasn’t born when that was happening. I believe it’s sort of like an origin of motorcycle culture in America. I’m really just making it up, because I don’t know any facts.”

With that last sentence, Charlie Hunnam left open his character’s possible return. While Charlie Hunnam admitted he did not see the upcoming TV series focusing on the fictional Sons of Anarchy motorcycle club, recent reports by Variety have suggested that the show will be set in a more modern era. If the opportunity were available, Charlie Hunnam would jump at the chance to reprise the role of Jax Teller, E! News reported.

“But again, I could be wrong [about the spin-off]. And listen I’m unemployed right now so if they want to give me a job that’s all good with me.”

Variety also confirmed that the show has already began script development as Kurt Sutter has signed on with Elgin James to co-create and write the series. While Sutter created and wrote much of the Sons of Anarchy series, Kurt wanted to bring in a writer with a Latino heritage for authenticity for the Mayans MC project.

“I wanted to find a strong, unique Latino voice because I didn’t think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions. Elgin is that voice [to create a] dark, visceral family drama that takes a new look at the most American of icons, the 1% outlaw, this time reflected through a Latino lens.”

While nothing has been confirmed, Sons of Anarchy alum Emilio Rivera appears to be on-board for the spin-off. Recently, Kurt Sutter posted a selfie with Rivera when the two met. The caption spoke volumes about their relationship, suggesting that a collaboration between the former Sons of Anarchy actors was in the works.

“Breaking bread on the mean streets of Santa Monica. Only love and respect for this man.”

If the Sons of Anarchy spin-off is not in the plans for Charlie Hunnam, fans of the 36-year-old actor won’t have long to wait before seeing his return to the screen. Charlie Hunnam is scheduled to appear in four movies over the next 18 months, including The Lost City of Z and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.
