Jon Bon Jovi Reveals The Secret To His 27-Year Marriage
Jon Bon Jovi says his wife is the glue that holds his family together. In a new interview with People, the Bon Jovi frontman said his high school sweetheart and wife of 27 years, Dorothea Hurley Bongiovi, helps keep him humble.
“She’s the glue,” Jon told People. “I’m the crazy visionary with all kinds of things flying, and the seams are all splitting. She’s the one following me with the glue and the thread and needle, keeping it all together.”
Jon Bon Jovi and his future wife first met in the late 1970s at Sayreville War Memorial High School in their New Jersey hometown. They eloped to Las Vegas a decade later when Jon was at the height of success with Bon Jovi. Jon and Dorothea were married in 1989 in true rock star style by an Elvis impersonator at the Graceland Wedding Chapel. Nearly 30 years later, Jon and Dorothea are parents to four kids: Stephanie, 23 Jesse, 21, Jacob, 14, and Romeo, 12.
Jon’s wife told People that their family is always a priority, and the Bon Jovi singer admitted that when it’s time to hit the road to go on tour he leaves “kicking and screaming.”
“You see my fingernails in the driveway,” Jon revealed. “I’m not a journeyman. I know some people who are applause junkies. I’m not.”
Bon Jovi and his wife also revealed that when their oldest daughter overdosed on opioids while in college, they dealt with it as a family. Jon called the incident “a terrible speed bump we got over” and said his family “couldn’t get any closer.”
Last year, Jon Bon Jovi revealed the secret to his long marriage.
“I got it right the first time,” Jon told People. “She’s the best, I just adore her.”
While his marriage is solid, Jon Bon Jovi previously told Men’s Health magazine that he was no saint in the early days of his rock stardom.
“I have not been a saint,” Jon admitted. “But it’s not like Dorothea came in halfway through the movie and didn’t know who she got…she’s been in it the whole game. ”
In 2010, former Bon Jovi tour manager Rick Bozzett dished on the rocker’s life in the book the book Sex, Drugs, and Bon Jovi. Bozzett claims that during a break in his early relationship with Dorothea, the “Livin’ On a Prayer” singer hooked up with actress Diane Lane. But Jon’s relationship with the Hollywood star allegedly ended after he caught Lane partying with his guitarist Richie Sambora.

During his rock star heyday, Jon Bon Jovi could have had his pick of women. But according to the Daily Mail, Jon has gone on record as saying he never considered trading his wife for another woman, especially a Hollywood type.
“I find that women are much sexier when they age gracefully,” Jon said. “I want to see them in cowboy boots and blue jeans and not with so much liposuction that they can’t even close their eyes. You see women with it everywhere in Hollywood and, urgh…”
While he loves Dorothea’s natural look, Jon has also joked that his wife thinks he’s “fat and old.”
“But hey, for an old man who has no plastic surgery, still has all his own hair and wears a 30-inch waist, I’m doing okay!” Bon Jovi told Extra.
While Jon Bon Jovi gets a lot of attention for his long marriage, the rock star has pointed out that he’s in good company. U2’s Bono and his wife, Ali Hewson, have been married for 34 years, while fellow Jersey rocker Bruce Springsteen and wife Patti Scalfia recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.
Bon Jovi recently released his latest album, This House Is Not For Sale.
