NYC Man, 64, Dies After Knockout Attack [Video]

A 64-year-old man tragically died after being sucker punched on a Queens, New York, street corner.

The incident occurred back on June 26, but the NYPD released surveillance video yesterday of a suspect and an alleged accomplice who casually sauntered away from the scene after the deadly encounter. Both are still at large, and detectives hope the public can identify them.

The victim is identified as Patrick Gorman, who was punched in the head in the Queens Boulevard area around midnight and died the next morning at a local hospital. The footage shows Gorman trying to get up after he was blindsided by the punch and then falling back down. See footage embedded below.

Authorities have ruled his death a homicide.

Apparently the fatal blow came as the result of misunderstanding, the New York Daily News reported.

“The footage shows a man in a white T-shirt walking up behind Patrick Gorman on the corner of Queens Blvd. and Main St., just a block from the victim’s home, and knocking him to the ground with a single punch just after midnight on June 26. Police sources said investigators believe Patrick Gorman bumped into the man’s girlfriend and said ‘I’m sorry, excuse me,’ — only to be punched out by the boyfriend. The assailant coolly walked away with a woman in tow as Gorman flailed on the ground, the video shows. Gorman suffered head trauma and died about nine hours later at Jamaica Hospital. The city Medical Examiner concluded last week that Patrick Gorman died from a combination of the punch along with complications from a stroke and a contributing heart condition.”

Neighbors described Gorman, a big baseball fan, as a quiet, nice guy who never bothered anyone, the New York Post noted. He apparently was punched after returning home from bus trip to a Baltimore Orioles game.

the police request any citizen who has information about the attack to contact the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS or visit the Crime Stoppers website. A text line also is in operation

The NYPD has not yet fully explained why it took so long to release the footage of the one-punch knockout attack into the public domain.

“‘The video could have been released the last week in June or the first week in July,’ said Bryan Gorman, the victim’s brother. ‘Between the time it happened and last week, it seemed like there really wasn’t much being done on it,'” the Daily News added.

According an NYPD spokesperson, however, “detectives weren’t sure until the Medical Examiner issued its findings on Oct. 29 whether the punch or the pre-existing medical condition caused his death.”

Queens Boulevard is a main thoroughfare connecting the New York City borough of Queens with midtown Manhattan via the Queensboro Bridge.

“[One] question is why authorities dragged their heels in announcing the assault was a homicide and thus delaying the release of the video and the chances of capturing the assailants?” the Scallywag and Vagabond website wondered.

Gorman’s sister-in-law described him as someone who wouldn’t hurt a fly, and his niece spoke highly of her uncle.

“He was my godfather, he was the best man I knew — loved baseball and loved his family,” CBS2 New York noted.

“Police described the first suspect as a black man in his 30s with short hair. He was seen wearing a white T-shirt, black shorts, sneakers and was holding a black bag. Investigators believe the woman is his girlfriend. She was described as having short hair with glasses and was seen wearing a white T-shirt, jeans and sandals,” CBS2 detailed about the fatal attack on Queens resident Patrick Gorman.
