New ‘Wonder Woman’ Trailer Reveals A Fresh Look At The Legendary Heroine [Video]

Earlier today saw the release of the latest (and most in-depth, as yet) trailer for Wonder Woman. Despite lingering questions about previous films’ performance and the future of the series, the DC Cinematic universe continues along in bold fashion. The latest trailer for the new version of the long-running comics character reveals a fresh look at the legendary heroine, who celebrated 75 years earlier this summer.

Starring Gal Gadot and Chris Pine and directed by Patty Jenkins, this new version of Wonder Woman looks to the past in its story while bringing a modern approach to the action. As of this writing, the trailer has over 470,000 views on YouTube.

The new Wonder Woman trailer opens in what appears to be the present day, with the modern Diana (often known under the alias Diana Prince), played by Gal Gadot, looking back on World War I. It then appears to cut to the past, with Diana on Themyscira, her secret home island. It looks like she sees a plane crash into the ocean nearby – possibly a primitive propeller warplane of that era of the early 1900s. She dives in after it and rescues a body, likely Steve Trevor, played by Chris Pine. Trevor is a U.S. military intelligence officer who is a long-time fixture in the comics and other past adaptations of the material.

The trailer then cuts to a group of soldiers hurriedly getting off a small landing vessel. Pause the video, and the side of their boat appears to read “schwaden” – the German word for “cloud.” Cloud might imply something designed to fade into thin air, something secret. Perhaps this could be a secret German spy mission of some kind? Given that Steve Trevor is in U.S. intelligence, maybe the Germans are on his trail.

The next scene we see has been hinted at in previous trailers and clips, but this is the fans first chance to get a more detailed look at a major battle sequence in action. What appears to be German soldiers race headlong towards a mounted army of Amazon female warriors of Themyscira. Director Patty Jenkins seems to borrow some of the stylistic qualities of her counterpart at DC films, Zack Synder – particularly in the realm of slow motion action. Overall, however, the film seems to have a much brighter color scheme than Synder’s moody blacks, blues, and grays. This is especially noticeable in the scenes set on Themyscira.

The women of Themyscira confront Steve Trevor and Diana learns how the rest of the outside world is embroiled in global conflict. She has to make a decision, and she opts to leave all that she has known and try to help her newly discovered brethren.

“I cannot stand by while innocent lives are lost.”

This line marks a turning point in a character, where she ceases to by just Diana and becomes something more. It is her first step towards becoming Wonder Woman.

Film writer and critic Siddhant Adlakha, writing about the new trailer for Birth Movies Death, wonders how the narrative in Wonder Woman will connect to what was seen in Batman v Superman but is overall very impressed with the new trailer. He had not enjoyed the previous films in the franchise so far but feels that this time could be different.

He goes as far as to state, “This movie could save the DC Universe… DC is zero-for-three at the moment, but it’s hard not to have at least a little faith in this one. ”

“It’s great to see Wonder Woman marketed not just as a warrior, but as a protector. The film seems to use the modern day as a framing device, a retrospective on some of our darkest times, in this case The Great War [World War I]. And while I’m not sure how you can avoid a downer ending when it’s already established that Diana went into hiding because humanity is terrible (what was she doing during World War II?), this trailer packs enough ‘Oomph’ and enough spectacular, fist-pumping moments that I have a feeling it’ll get by.”

Wonder Woman will be released next summer, on June 2, 2017. What did you think of the trailer? Feel free to leave a comment below.
