Kidnapped New York Times Reporter Freed In Pre-Dawn Raid In Afghanistan

NATO forces rescued a New York Times reporter on Wednesday who had been kidnapped last week in Afghanistan.

Reporter Stephen Farrell and Afghan journalist Sultan Munad had been kidnapped in northern Kunduz Province by armed gunmen on Saturday while covering a NATO airstrike on Taliban forces.

Farrell, 46, was rescued in a pre-dawn raid this morning, but Munad was struck and killed by crossfire, along with an Afghan woman and child, and a British commando also died in the operation, according to reports.

For security reasons, the New York Times had not reported Farrell’s kidnapping while he was held hostage, according to reports.
