Kevin Love won’t be on the court when the Minnesota Timberwolves start the NBA season this year.

The team announced today that Love will be out for 6-8 weeks with a broken right hand. CBS Sports reports that Love suffered the injury during a team workout on Wednesday morning.

The Star Tribune reports that Love broke two bones in his right hand. He is scheduled to see hand specialist Dr. Andy Weiland at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York on Thursday.

The Minnesota Timberwolves play their first pre-season game this Friday and their first regular season game on November 2. If Love is sidelined for the next eight weeks, he’ll miss the first 20 or so games of the season.

Love averaged 19.3 points per game for the Timberwolves last season on top of his 13.3 rebounds. Derrick Williams, who was drafted second in the 2011 NBA draft, is expected to pick up the slack in Love’s absence.

Love’s injury will hurt the Timberwolves, but it isn’t the only injury that will plague the team at the beginning of the season. Point guard Ricky Rubio will miss the first six weeks of the regular season as he recovers from a torn left ACL.
