Taylor Swift Wrote Little Big Town’s ‘Better Man’: Is It About Calvin Harris?

While Taylor Swift has made it clear that she’s on an extended hiatus from making any personal music, she is still writing for other artists. Just a few months ago, it was reported that she wrote Calvin Harris’ hit single “This Is What You Came For,” which features vocals from Rihanna. Now, it looks like Taylor has written another hit for country quartet Little Big Town.

Despite the rumors, Taylor Swift did not release any new music of hers this year. However, that hasn’t stopped her from working with other artists. Little Big Town confirmed on Tuesday, Nov. 1, that the 26-year-old singer-songwriter wrote their new single “Better Man.” The single was originally released on Oct. 20, while the music video was released today. Of course, the song title and lyrics alone are making fans wonder if Swift wrote the song about Calvin Harris.

Vocalist Karen Fairchild revealed during a press conference in Nashville, via Entertainment Weekly, that Swift was the one who offered the song to them.

“Can you tell us who wrote ‘Better Man’?” a reporter asked the question.

“Some of you have been asking, and we told you there was a young girl in Nashville wrote it by herself,” Fairchild said. “And it’s Taylor Swift.”

The reason why Swift gave Little Big Town the sweet breakup song was because she thought their voices would fit better on it. Fairchild even hinted that Swift’s song is “really special” to her, which is making fans scratch their heads. Why would Swift give away one of her songs if the lyrics mean a lot to her?

“She sent us this song and it was one that was really special to her and she thought of us because of the harmonies and she’s never pitched a song to anyone before and the moment that we heard it we were like, ‘man, that is a song that we’re gonna cut.'”

The band is comprised of Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Jimi Westbrook, and Philip Sweet. They described the country singer-turned-pop star as a longtime friend that they knew ever since Swift was in high school. Swift even took to Instagram to reveal to her fans that she wrote the song for the band.

“Feeling really honored that a band I’ve loved for so many years has decided to record this song I wrote,” Swift wrote in the caption shortly after Little Big Town made the announcement. “Good luck at #cmaawards… Love you guys.”

Now, you can check out the song and video in all its glory, thanks to Rolling Stone. The video for “Better Man” was released on the same day of the Ryman press conference and can be viewed below.

There has been mixed confirmation about exactly when Swift’s new song was written. A fan revealed on Twitter that she actually wrote it in 2010, but has since deleted the account and apologized for giving the wrong information. But the timing is coincidental after Swift’s breakup from Calvin Harris, 32. According to Hollywood Life, “Better Man” is about a woman letting go of a guy after she realized that he didn’t give her everything she wanted. To many of Swift’s fans, it sounds like something off her Red album.

The lyrics go, “You’re talking down to me like I’ll always be around / You push my love away like it’s some kind of loaded gun / Boy, you never thought I’d run,” and “But I just miss you, and I just wish you were a better man / And I know why we had to say goodbye / Like the back of my hand / And I just miss you, and I just wish you were a better man.”
