Baby Jessica Rescue Anniversary: 25 Years Later, Married With Two Kids

Baby Jessica now 26, married with two kids

Today marks the 25th anniversary of Baby Jessica’s rescue from a well in Midland, Texas. At 26, Jessica McClure is now a stay-at-home mother with two children.

When she was 18-months-old, McClure fell into a 22-foot well at 9:30 am on Wednesday, October 14, 1987, while she was playing with two other children in her family’s backyard. She was stuck in there for 58 hours before rescue workers managed to free her on Friday, October 16. At one point, her right leg had gotten wedged alongside her body in the narrow space, and doctors feared she might choke on the food and drink that had been sent down to her. Her ordeal was turned into a made-for-TV movie on ABC two years later.

McClure became eligible to receive the $800,000 trust fund that had been set up in her name last year. She plans to put the money into a college fund for her two children, Simon and Sheyenne.

McClure married husband Daniel Morales in 2006, and took on his last name. The couple lives less than two miles from where she fell into the well. They run a mobile car and truck washing business out of their home.

McClure said she has no memory of the ordeal, or of the 15 operations she had to undergo after being rescued. She lost a toe due to gangrene and has a scar on her forehead from where she rubbed against the well. She also suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, but is otherwise in good health.

Jessica McClure rarely talks about the incident, and in 2002 told Ladies Home Journal that talking about it bored her. She also said she is proud of her scars, because they mean she survived.

Do you remember when Baby Jessica was rescued from the well?

I know she was only 18 months old and has no memories of it but to say it 'bores her' is a tad conceded. I bet the money she received isn't boring her. Maybe mom and dad should have gotten the money since they live with the ordeal everyday and probably can't close their eyes without thinking about it. I guess it's time to quit thinking about Jessica and caring about how she turned out. They might BORE her as well!

I don't think she made that comment to sound conceited. She is now 26 yrs old and she is still known as "Baby Jessica" to all of us who watched and waited for her to be rescued. After 26 years of talking about the same events and having no recollection of it, i'm sure she is bored with the same old-same old.

My husband I were flying from Dallas o NYC. As we left I told my husband I guess we'll have to wait a week to find out how it turned out. I didn't realize the whole country would be totally emmersed in Baby Jessica. Needless osay even New Yorker wer just as concered. I didn't miss a thing because that was all that was tlked about on TV.

I don't think she was being conceited at all. I bet it would be terribly mundane to have people ask you the same questions every single year, when she was clearly a toddler and has no memory of it ever happening to her. I believe she is telling people its time to move on.

I remember very well what I was doing the day Jessica was rescued – I was in labor with our last son; we watched every minute in the delivery room, and she was rescued a few minutes before he was born! Every year on my son's birthday I also think of Jessica and wish her well.

I remember being glued to the TV and rejoiced with America when Baby Jessica emerged from the ground. What about those workers that did not stop until she was safe? This event united the nation in a spirit of love toward a baby and her parents and so proud of caring citizens and professionals that worked together to save a life. Jessica may be bored and does not remember. Ask her parents and anyone that watched this event as to how blessed this young lady is to be alive and have these two children. The fact that they have a college fund is beside the point. I am sorry Jessica does not remember but the photos and videos should be enough to impress upon her as a mother of two children the meaning of her life.

I remeber watching her rescue on TV I was 12. I just wished the article could have mentioned more about the rescuers who responded so quickly and who were there throughout the whole 58 hours never giving up hope that they would get her out alive. I am also glad that she has decided put money away for her childrens college fund.

I will never forget this even though I was only six years old. I was at church and it was children's time and our pastor asked all of us little kids to pray a prayer for jessica the little girl who fell down the well. I did pray for her because I thought that must be the scariest thing that could happen to a little girl. My father later explained how she fell into the well and I was very afraid around my grandmother's pump well for years after.
