How To Download The PC Version of ‘Watch Dogs 2’ For Free Without Breaking Any Laws

Watch Dogs 2 will be released this month on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, and the game has already gone gold with pre-order sales alone. While console users will get the game on schedule, PC gamers will have to wait since the free-roaming hacker sandbox has been delayed for computers by two weeks. However, PC owners will get some things that console users will not.

The computer version will have richer graphics and an uncapped framerate, but PC gamers might also be able to score the game for free. Of course, there is a catch. There is always a catch.

Samsung announced on its website that it would be teaming up with Ubisoft to give away download codes for the PC version of the title. Purchasers of select Samsung products will be eligible for a free digital copy of Watch Dogs 2.

According to Digital Trends, Andrew Sivori, vice president of CE-IT Marketing at Samsung, stated that the promotion was about adding “value” for its customers.

“Samsung is dedicated to providing best-in-class technology to gamers, so we’re excited to offer Ubisoft’s highly anticipated Watch Dogs 2 as an added value with our industry-leading SSDs and monitors. Our high-performance SSDs and stunning new monitors deliver an enhanced gaming experience, providing exceptional visuals and lag-free gameplay.”

The products that carry the free download code are restricted to Samsung solid state drives (SSD) and curved gaming monitors. The offer is further limited to specific models of these components.

This Samsung/Ubisoft Watch Dogs 2 promotion is a good deal if one is in need of a new monitor or storage device. However, the limitations of the models of these “upgrades” might also limit the number of people willing to participate in the promotion.

There are only three monitors that qualify. The CFG70 24 and 27-inch curved gaming monitors, and the CF791 34-inch will all come with a free copy of the PC version of Watch Dogs 2.

According to Rock Paper Shotgun, curved monitor screens started as a gimmick with HDTVs, which didn’t make much sense. The proposed point of viewing on a curved screen is for immersion, but to achieve that, the viewer must be sitting in the middle of the screen. It is not likely that many families pile up on each other’s laps for movie night. However, curved-screen immersion is ideal for computer monitors, especially since computer gaming is mostly a solo affair.

For those in the market for a new monitor, a curved screen might be worth a try, especially if it comes with a free PC digital download of Watch Dogs 2. However, pricing is a bit too steep just to chase after a free download code. The 24 and 27-inch models cost $350 and $450 respectively. Those prices are reasonable for monitors as long as the smaller screen is tolerable. However, curved monitors are meant for immersion, and that will be hindered significantly by the smaller screens. The 34-inch CF791 has received excellent reviews but runs $1000, which is a far reach for those primarily interested in the game.

A much more reasonable solution to get a Watch Dogs 2 freebie is to purchase one of the SSDs listed in the promotion. There is a broader variety of SSDs on offer than monitors, but selections are still limited.

The drives that Samsung is offering in this deal include the following.

  • SSD 960 PRO NVMe M.2 — 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB
  • SSD 960 EVO NVMe M.2 — 500GB, and 1TB
  • Portable SSD T3 — 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB
  • SSD 850 PRO 2.5? SATA III –512GB, 1TB, and 2TB
  • SSD 850 EVO 2.5? SATA M.2 — 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB
  • SSD 850 EVO M.2 — 500GB and 1TB
  • SSD 850 EVO mSATA — 500GB and 1TB

These drives range in price from around $170 up to almost $1500 for the 4TB 850 EVO. Samsung has smaller capacity versions of these drives, but they are not eligible for the free game. Again, players only looking to get the game for free are out of luck. However, those who have been considering purchasing a new SSD might be happy to order one that comes with a free Watch Dogs 2 download code. Even for those not interested in upgrading their computers to SSD, the lower-capacity Portable SSD T3 offers 500GB of external storage for $200 and is included in the promotion.

To take advantage of the offer, those interested should head over to Samsung’s website, and order one of the qualifying products. On completion of the purchase, buyers will be given a download code. The codes can be redeemed at the Watch Dogs 2 website by following the instructions provided.

Samsung and Ubisoft scheduled this promotion just in time for Black Friday and holiday shopping. The promotion is going on from now until December 31, but the free download codes remain active through July 2017. Watch Dogs 2 releases on November 15 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The PC version will not be available until November 29, 2016.
