Shannen Doherty Opens Up About Cancer Battle And Her Husband In Heartbreaking Interview With Chelsea Handler

Shannen Doherty opened up about her battle with cancer in an emotional interview with Chelsea Handler, the People reports.

Doherty, 45, sat down with Handler to talk about the things she’s learned since being diagnosed with the disease in 2015.

“I think what’s beautiful and hard and interesting about cancer is that it tears you down and builds you, and tears you down and builds you,” the Beverly Hills 90210 actress says. “It remakes you so many different times. The person I thought I was supposed to be or was going to be or who I thought I was six months ago is now somebody completely different. I realize ‘Wow, I really thought that I was so brave and so gracious this entire time and really I was just hiding.'”

Chelsea Handler, perhaps remembering her mother who died of breast cancer in 2006, tried to fight back tears. Shannon, also trying to keep herself composed, told her, “Don’t cry.”

Handler, trying to keep her emotions in check, threw back her head and said, “I mean alright, hold on a second, f**k.”

Then Shannen spoke about how her battle with cancer has humbled her, but that it was still difficult for her because of how the illness has impacted her loved ones, most particularly her husband Kurt Iswarienko.

“This was very hard and not humbling – because I’ve already been humbled by cancer,” says Doherty. “It was hard in the sense of rethinking sort of who you are and how you come to terms with who are now and accepting it and looking at your husband and thinking like, ‘Dude, I’m so sorry.'”

Doherty and Handler have become closer since the former was diagnosed with cancer last year.

Only a few days ago the actress took to Instagram to share a photo of them together, writing how much they’ve bonded together since meeting each other years ago.

“And then there is this lady…. @chelseahandler We met many many years ago. Have run into each other and always exchanged numbers, talked of plans etc. Chelsea reached out and has since, made a point to have date nights with me on a weekly basis. Yeah she’s funny but also wicked smart with a huge heart. This one just wants to make a difference. Sometimes the right people come into your life at the right time.”

Shannen Doherty has been open about her struggles and successes with cancer in social media, giving her followers frequent updates about her emotional journey in fighting the disease. In August, Shannen revealed that her breast cancer had spread to her lymph nodes.

She shared photos of herself shaving her head. At one time, she is seen crying while preparing to lose her hair on account of coming treatments.

On Friday, Shannen shared a black and white photo of herself lying in her hospital bed on her side while hooked up to machines and a bag placed next to her head. In her caption, Doherty wrote about how sometimes it feels like she won’t be able to make it, but the feeling always passes after a few days or so when she’s able to move.

“#fbf to a very short bit ago. Day after #chemoday isn’t always so great,” Shannen wrote. “Sometimes one isn’t able to dance, or eat or even to think about the next day. Sometimes it just feels like you aren’t going to make it.”

“That passes,” she continues. “Sometimes the next day or 2 days later or 6 but it passes and movement is possible. Hope is possible. Possibility is possible. To my cancer family and everyone suffering…. stay courageous. Stay strong. Stay positive. #wegotthis. #fightlikeagirl.”

In August, Doherty took to Instagram to share her experience after undergoing another series of chemotherapy.

Throughout her battle with cancer, the actress took to social media to chronicle her tender moments with her husband Kurt Iswarienko, who has remained supportive and always stayed by her side.

Back in February, in an interview with Dr. Oz, Shannen Doherty revealed she can no longer have children because of the cancer treatment she will be undergoing, the Daily Mail reports.

“I’m 44 and my husband and I wanted children,” the Charmed star said.

Shannen Doherty’s full interview is set to air on Netflix’s Chelsea on October 28.
