Joe Biden Eyed By Hillary Clinton: VP Biden Is Clinton’s Top Pick For Secretary Of State

Vice President Joe Biden is said to be at the top of the list for Hillary Clinton’s old job of secretary of state should she win the presidential election in November. Biden is at the top of a list of potential secretary of state candidates compiled by the Clinton transition team, who are tasked with preparing for a Clinton presidency.

According to Politico, decisions being made by the Clinton transition team are being closely guarded to prevent the campaign from presenting too confident. However, with Clinton now leading Donald Trump in most national polls, it is to be expected that her campaign would start preparing for after November 8. The decision of who should be her secretary of state is hugely significant for Hillary Clinton, considering she herself held the position under President Obama between 2009 and 2013.

Whilst Joe Biden is at the top of the transition team’s list for secretary of state, the campaign is yet to reach out to Biden to offer the position. A source within the Clinton transition team confirmed that they’re currently strategizing how to approach Biden, saying “He’d be great, and they are spending a lot of time figuring out the best way to try to persuade him to do it if she wins.” Biden initially considered a run against Clinton for the Democratic nomination in 2015, however, ultimately decided not to and support Clinton’s candidacy.

According to New York Daily News, the vice president has a good deal of experience that would prepare him for the challenging role as secretary of state. Before becoming Barack Obama’s vice president in 2009, Biden chaired the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and is considered to have the most international experience of any Democrat. Biden has spent nearly 44 years in Washington, with six terms in the Senate and then serving two terms as vice president under Obama, where he was also active in international matters.

In the past few weeks, Joe Biden has been actively campaigning for Hillary Clinton, alongside other key members of the Obama administration, including Michelle Obama and President Barack Obama himself. He’s also expressed a good deal of interest in remaining active in international politics, which would assumably make secretary of state the perfect position for him.

Both Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden notably served together in the Senate, before they both launched a presidential bid in 2008. However, both lost out to Barack Obama and ultimately went on to serve as part of his administration. During that time, Clinton and Biden are believed to have clashed on a number of key issues, including the raid that killed Osama bin Laden. Whilst Clinton was a keen advocate of the mission, Biden is believed to have been warier, suggesting differentiating policies between the pair.

Joe Biden is still an incredibly popular name in American politics, retaining a high approval rate in his last few months as vice president. That high approval rating coupled with his international experience would undeniably make him a fantastic pick for Clinton’s old job. However, it remains incredibly unlikely that the Clinton campaign would make any announcements of cabinet appointments before election day, especially considering Biden is yet to express any interest in the position.

The next president of the United States will be decided on November 8. The winning candidate is expected to announce cabinet appointments shortly after.
