‘Will & Grace’ Comeback To NBC Already Taking Shape

The Will & Grace comeback to NBC is done and dusted, according to multiple sources after a successful election-themed video that attracted more than 6 million views. While the cast discussed the upcoming presidential election in the viral video, that is not expected to be the theme of the upcoming season, which is poised for 10 episodes.

The Emmy-winning sitcom ran for eight seasons, from 1998 to 2006, on NBC before its cancellation. According to E! News, the series is being revived after the 10-minute reunion video went viral, having been met with fanfare across various platforms. In the video, Megan Mullally, Debra Messing, Eric McCormack, and Sean Hayes encouraged voters on the need to vote at the upcoming elections on November 8.

One thing that became clear after the 10-minute clip is that the cast has not missed a beat or even the chemistry that won the show 16 Emmy awards. Even though 10 years have passed since the airing of the last episode, bringing back the show appears to be the right call.

Media outlet Mashable believes Hillary Clinton might have had a say on the reboot of the comedy series. In a tweet, the network wrote the following.

“A real ‘Will & Grace’ revival is in the works thanks to Hillary Clinton.”

Fuelling speculation that a Will & Grace comeback to NBC is in the cards is one of the stars, Megan Mullally, telling CNN that anything is “possible.”

“All I can say is I don’t know what the future holds, but I know there’s a very good feeling right now between everybody, and we had a lot of fun going back and working together…So who knows.”

The Will & Grace comeback to NBC will not come as a surprise given that reboots have become the order of the day as people continue to yearn for more original shows. Fox has already revived X-Files, and Prison Break is set to make a comeback before the end of the year. Gilmore Girls is also poised for a comeback on Netflix next month.

A re-run of the hit comedy series, as part of a new season, should be available for streaming as early as next year, according to Morning Ledger. NBC has reportedly opened talks with all the talent of the show, which includes creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick, an indication that a reboot is more than certain.

A limited run of the series means viewers may have to contend with a one-off season as the network analyzes viewer’s response to the reboot. However, that does not mean the Will & Grace comeback to NBC will be limited to one season. Depending on how it performs in terms of capturing viewers and ratings, the network could be swayed to continue production.

There is more to Will & Grace, compared to other shows, that makes it’s comeback unique. It is worth remembering that it was the first primetime show to have two gay leads at a time when LBTQ rights were a hot topic. However, times have changed thanks to the influence the show had according to Vice President Joe Biden.

In a 2012 Meet the Press interview, according to the Washington Times, Biden sort of explained the role the hit comedy series played in influencing the rights of the LGBT community.

“I think ‘Will & Grace’ probably did more to educate the American public than almost anything anybody has ever done so far.”

Room for growth for Will & Grace is more than certain given the number of services that have cropped up in the recent past for carrying such content. The likes of Netflix, Hulu, and HBO have sparked strong demand for original shows as people look to watch content while on the go.

The Will & Grace comeback to NBC may end up being extended to streaming services, according to The Bustle. The source reports that Debra Messing (Grace) believes that by doing so, the show would have more freedom and room for growth.

“If there was a ‘Will & Grace’ 2.0, my wish is that we did 10 [episodes] on, like, Netflix or Amazon or somewhere where it could be the naughty version of ‘Will & Grace.’ Because you know we were on network television and there were certain lines of common storytelling that we were limited to so it would be fun to kind of go into that world where nothing is held back.”

While talk is rife of a Will & Grace comeback to NBC, a confirmation from the network or the creators should settle the rumors as the countdown begins.
