‘Fixer Upper’ Rumors: Is The Show And Its Hosts All Fake?

Now that Property Brothers and all their spin-off shows are no longer the hot tickets that they once were, the news from the HGTV camp concerns the latest Fixer Upper rumors. Even though the show’s stars, Chip and Joanna Gaines, are enjoying a spate of success that they’ve never experienced before, rumors are beginning to emerge that the show, and its hosts, aren’t what they appear to be.

The first sign of potential fakery in the Fixer Upper world comes to us courtesy of WetPaint, who did a complete article on the Fixer Upper rumors and other HGTV shows. The outlet uncovered that HGTV shows, in general, “fake” a lot more than people realize. For example, people who go on Fixer Upper aren’t allowed to keep the furniture in the final reveal, but they do have the option to purchase the furnishings after the show. According to those who participated, however, the furnishings don’t come cheap. Not, mind you, that Joanna should work for free, but it would be nice to get that disclosure while we’re watching the show.

Another set of Fixer Upper rumors come to us courtesy of Radar Online, who confirm Wetpaint‘s report that came out late last month. According to Radar, not only do Chip and Joanna force the participating couples to pay for everything — sometimes, to the tune of $300,000 — but their “good Christian couple” image is all an act as they’ve been arrested for having unpaid tickets due to unruly animals.

Chip is actually quite open about the arrest, and even brags about it, in a way.

“These weren’t like parking tickets either. They came with heavy fines, which I absolutely refused to pay out of some misguided form of principle….well, guess what? When you don’t pay your fines, eventually the police come looking for you. We owed something like $2,500 in tickets, and we simply didn’t have that kind of money lying around even if we wanted to pay the fines. They weren’t going to let us talk to the judge at all. The whole thing was just a sting to get us to come down there and be arrested. They arrested [me] on the spot.”

Finally, other Fixer Upper rumors about the show’s possible faking come to us courtesy of Good Housekeeping, who suggest that the Gaines’ whole “perfect parents” routine is really an act.

Chalking it up to a “rookie parenting mistake,” Joanna told the outlet about the time Chip left their newborn baby home alone twice in one week.

“Chip [had] actually driven to the store and bought fresh fruit and real maple syrup and orange juice. Drake was sound asleep in his swing, still wearing nothing but his diaper. I said, “Chip, did you take Drake to the grocery store without any clothes on?” “Oh my gosh,” he said. “I totally forgot Drake was here. He was so quiet.” Anyone who’s met Chip knows he can get a little sidetracked, but this was our child! Several days later I decided to go on a good long jog, trusting that Chip would not leave Drake again. On my way back I saw Chip coming down the road in his truck. I looked in the back, thinking, Of course, he’s got Drake. But I didn’t see a car seat.”

Chip even made light of the incident.

“I sure hope no one from Child Protective Services reads this book. They can’t come after me retroactively, can they?”
