Tropical Storm Fred Strengthening In Far Eastern Atlantic, Not Expected To Threaten Land

Tropical Storm Fred is strengthening in the far eastern portion of the Atlantic Ocean where it formed Monday night, forecasters say.
Tuesday morning, Fred was about 285 miles southwest of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands and it was moving west at about 15 mph, National Hurricane Center officials said.
Forecasters don’t think Fred will threaten land because it expected to make a gradual turn to the west-northwest and northwest over the next few days while also decreasing its forward speed.
At 5 a.m., Tropical Storm Fred had maximum sustained winds of nearly 50 mph. Forecasters say that Fred could become a hurricane over the next few days.
