Gum Disease A Significant Cancer Risk Factor

gumdisease

Buffalo, NY (AHN) – Gum disease, or periodontitis, is an independent risk factor for head and neck cancers, researchers from the University of Buffalo said in a recent study.

The researchers said in a statement that chronic gum disease could represent a clinical high-risk profile for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, even in those who never used tobacco.

Their report states that the results point to an increased need to promote oral hygiene and for people with gum disease to get treatment.

The study is published in the American Association for Cancer Research’s journal, Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.
