Half Of All Fish Consumed Now Come From Farms

Miami, FL (AHN) – Half the fish consumed worldwide are farm raised, according to a new report.

The researchers said in a statement that between 1995 and 2007, global production of farmed fish almost tripled, largely because of increased consumer demand and new information about the health benefits of consuming omega-3 fatty acids.

Oily fish like salmon and tuna are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which aid in the prevention of cardiovascular disease.

The researchers said that aquaculture should continue to boom as long as the health benefits from eating fish are promoted.

The report was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
