Son of Wisconsin GOP Senate candidate Tommy Thompson, at a Sunday brunch attended by GOP chair Reince Priebus, brought “birtherism” back to the mainstream Republican sphere with a comment that the crowd and GOP voters in general “have the opportunity to send President Obama back to Chicago … or Kenya.”
The Jason Thompson clip posted on YouTube came from a Republican Party Of Kenosha County brunch yesterday, and attendees can be heard laughing and clapping after the younger Thompson made the off-color remark referencing a long-held and erroneous belief among many Republicans that the President was born in Kenya.
After Thompson makes the crack, a female attendee says in the background:
“We are taking donations for that Kenya trip.”
As the clip began to circulate in the Monday morning news cycle, the campaign of Tommy Thompson addressed the embarrassing remark made by Jason Thompson on Sunday.
Commenting on the statement Thompson made about sending Obama back to Kenya, the campaign said:
“The Governor has addressed this with his son, just like any father would do … Jason Thompson said something he should not have, and he apologizes.”
While the mainstream GOP has made a weak effort to distance itself from birtherism, considered a somewhat fringe opinion, the idea that President Obama was born in Kenya keeps resurfacing around the party as the election approaches.
Later in the day, Paul Ryan stumped for Tommy Thompson in his home state, saying at a fundraiser:
“Scott [Walker], Reince and I are protégés of the Tommy Thompson farm team … He is a great leader who has done extraordinary things.”

Disgusting. The Republican Party is headed into its final days. This guy is clearly an ignorant douchebag. Also profoundly upsetting is the presence of those skinheads at the Romney/Ryan Ohio rally this past weekend. Of course the recent outing of the Governor Romney's multiple and on-record, public shifts on women's rights, etc. has been a shameful disgrace as well. The truth is that the few Republican party members across America who are truly NOT Racist/Homophobic/Anti-Woman are going to be continually held back by their fellow Republicans who, the evidence shows, are. I hope that this small group of Republicans scattered around the US can be strong enough in their own convictions to realize that they can be true to their own beliefs (whether economic or constitutional) but draw the line at hate – and simply refuse to pledge allegiance to this party that does not have the best interest of Americans in mind. The Republicans, currently, have hatred in mind. And that holds America back. To have hatred in mind – and heed these words – is selfishly, foolishly and recklessly UN-AMERICAN. And it won't be forgotten.
