iOS 10.1 Update: Why It’s Crucial To Download It ASAP On iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPad Pro, And Other Compatible Apple Devices
Apple just released the iOS 10.1 update today. One of the major highlights of the newest version of the mobile OS is the Portrait Mode, which is specifically available only for the iPhone 7 Plus. But aside from that, the iOS 10.1 update also addresses a number of vulnerabilities, which makes it vital for owners of compatible Apple devices to download the new firmware as soon as possible.
For instance, according to a tweet from Micah Lee, a security engineer, the iOS 10.1 update comes with a CoreGraphics security content which repairs a “remote code execution validity that’s exploited by getting (users) to open a malicious JPEG file.”

A vulnerability in the Contacts app was also addressed in the iOS 10.1 update, wherein an “application may be able to maintain access to the Address Book after access is revoked in Settings,” Apple’s support page noted. This was fixed through improved file-link validation.

Going back to the Portrait Mode, this new camera feature only works for the iPhone 7 Plus through its dual-camera setup. To those curious as to how it works, BGR explained that the primary shooter “actually captures two images, one with the 28mm lens and one with the 56mm lens.” Apple’s software then “takes data from both images and then fuses them together to create one unified photograph,” it added.
Expected to take more beautiful images, the iPhone 7 Plus rear camera through its Portrait Mode essentially adds a bokeh effect, creating a blurred background, which helps the subject of the photo to stand out even more. Take note, though, that the Portrait Mode is still in beta in iOS 10.1 update, which means there may still be issues as you use it.
Moreover, website 9to5Mac listed the full patch notes for the iOS 10.1 update. The Messages app gets a new option enabling users to replay bubble and full-screen effects. The update also fixes several Messages issues including contact names showing incorrectly in the app.
The Maps app is also getting major changes. The patch notes for the iOS 10.1 update noted the following changes for Maps.
- Transit support for every major train, subway, ferry, and national bus line, as well as local bus systems for Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya
- Sign-based transit navigation including layouts of all underground structures and walkways that connect large transit stations
- Transit fare comparison when viewing alternative transit routes
Fixes and improvements were also made to Apple Watch, AirPlay Mirroring, Bluetooth connectivity, Health app, Weather, Mail and more.
Aside from iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, the iOS 10.1 update is compatible with the iPhone 5, 5c, 5s, as well as the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, and iPhone SE. For the iPads, it should run on iPad mini 2, mini 3, mini 4, iPad 4, iPad Air, iPad Air 2. The two iPad Pro models, the 9.7-inch and the 12.9-inch will also get the iOS 10.1 update. The iPod Touch 6th generation is the only model from Apple’s media player family that can be upgraded with iOS 10.1.
Moreover, the report from Ars Tecnica explained the following about the latest iOS update.
“The build number, 14B72 on older iDevices and 14B72c on the 7 and 7 Plus, is identical to the beta build that was released last week, so if you’re enrolled in Apple’s public or developer beta programs, you already have the final version of the update.”
Those who are excited to get Apple’s iOS 10.1 update can head to the device’s Settings menu. Look for Software Update and tap Install Now to start downloading the OTA file. The Apple device will begin with the update process once the download has successfully ended. Furthermore, expect the iPhone or the compatible Apple mobile device to reboot automatically into iOS 10.1 after the installation process is completed.
Aside from the iOS 10.1 for its mobile devices, Apple also released the latest iteration of its MacOS Sierra this Monday, October 24. Version 10.12.1 is now available to compatible Mac devices.
