A peanut butter recall in the news in recent days has been ever-widening, affecting more and more products as they are traced back to a single plant.

The peanut butter recall is due to salmonella contamination and first became news again in late September when Trader Joe’s announced the potential risk and began recalling peanut butters and products containing peanut butter.

But soon many other retailers began participating in the peanut butter recall involving products distributed by New Mexico’s Sunland Inc., and the list has grown to over 400 items with popular snack Moon Pies and ice cream among those affected by potential salmonella contamination.

Following the Trader Joe’s peanut butter recall, Target and Whole Foods also began pulling peanut butter products distributed by Sunland from their shelves. Ultimately, the Sunland plant thought to be the source of the salmonella contamination was shut down as we reported earlier.

Robert Tauxe of the Centers for Disease and Control and Prevention (CDC) commented on the recall situation, saying that all the peanut butter and peanuts affected by the recall were believed to stem from the same source:

“All of the illnesses that have been investigated are related to the peanut butter products that are from the one plant.”

As the investigation broadened, Sunland expanded the recall to all items made at the plant since March 2010. ABC spoke with a grocery shopper named Barbara, who said she was sickened by contaminated peanut butter. Barbara explained:

“I had eaten peanut butter like three days in a row and I had just gotten so sick. I mean, seriously, this is a big deal.”

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has a complete list of foods affected by the Sunland peanut butter recall.
