WWE News: Sheamus Talks Cesaro, Conor McGregor, And Early WWE Days

Since debuting on the WWE main roster in 2009, Sheamus has become one of the company’s most recognizable and decorated superstars. From cracking silly jokes about his Irish heritage to being a four-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion, Sheamus’ career is the epitome of success.

But to become successful, “The Celtic Warrior” modeled and learned from WWE’s most respected veterans. That started early as just months into his WWE career, Sheamus was hanging out and traveling with everybody from

“Triple H was a big help to me. William Regal came on the road with me, when I first came up from FCW,” Sheamus said to SportsKeeda during the former King of The Ring’s media tour in India. “And of course, Fit Finlay used to assist me on a daily basis as well. He’s not just a mentor but also a great friend.”

Known as one of the hardest hitters in the ring, Sheamus’ in-ring persona is one to rarely shy away from a fight; much like his aforementioned mentor Finlay, whose motto boasted his love for fighting. That’s the reason why his recent pairing with former WWE United States Champion Cesaro — as opponents and tag team partners — has made for an interesting dynamic.

“I didn’t think we are a perfect pair at all! I thought we are the opposite of a perfect pair,” Sheamus said. “We’re the most dysfunctional tag team ever. I think when we wrestle each other, we bring out the best. It’s always a competition with us. We hit hard. We literally try and beat each other up. We’re Europeans. We followed the same kind of path to get to America and WWE. So we have a different mindset, and we’ve sacrificed a lot more. I’ve been on top and he hasn’t.”

The 38-year-old brawler admits that teaming with Cesaro isn’t his ideal scenario. A decorated World Heavyweight, something Sheamus mentions Cesaro has yet to achieve, Sheamus’ spot in the WWE main event scene is there whenever he wants to grab it.

However, versatility is a key part of the WWE. So while Sheamus has attained every major singles accolade WWE has to offer — capturing the World Championship, winning Money in the Bank (2015), the Royal Rumble (2012), and King of the Ring (2010) — he has nothing left to prove on his own. So moving forward, a team with Cesaro — despite his reservations — could be a dominant force.

“We just went out there to steal the show and we did. So yeah, now we’re a tag team for some reason but I’m trying to make it work. He irritates the hell out of me. And I think I irritate the hell out of him. So it’s going to be interesting to see what happens.”

Outside of wrestling, Sheamus’ fellow countryman and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) standout Conor McGregor has made a huge name for himself. Currently holding the UFC Featherweight Championship, McGregor’s brash, and outspoken style has garnered both praise and criticism. Perhaps never more than his controversial remarks about the WWE and its superstars.

However, Sheamus harbors no animosity toward McGregor. In fact, the master of the Irish Curse sounds enthused with the possibility of seeing McGregor in a WWE ring — fighting in the proper weight class.

“As far as I know he’s still going to be fighting for a really long time. I mean there’s a Cruiserweight Division now, so maybe McGregor can join the Cruiserweight Division,” Sheamus said. “But I really don’t know… it’s really up to him. He’s obviously got a lot of charisma, I don’t know… if Vince McMahon feels that there’s an opportunity to make money he’ll be here.”
