Microsoft’s Windows 10 Mobile Update Hit Download Error: Here’s How You Can Fix It

Microsoft is rolling out the new Windows 10 Mobile build 14951, and users are already complaining of an issue regarding the download of the update patch.

On October 20, Microsoft posted a forum topic regarding the downloading issue that hinders users from successfully getting the latest Windows 10 Mobile patch.

“We’ve just launched build 14951 to the Fast ring today and we’re seeing reports from users staying their device is not progressing past ‘0% downloading’ on the update screen.”

Microsoft has since promised that they are probing the cause of this problem and have started combing through logs.

According to the complaints from users who posted in the forum, their smart devices that are running on Windows 10 Mobile were frozen after initiating the update download.

“I have a Lumia 640 LTE and a Lumia 930 both of which were stuck at 0%. I reset both with the Windows Device Recovery tool which returns both to WP 8.1,” user R_i_c_h posted on October 20.

According to the Windows 10 Mobile user, one of the devices she is using successfully started the download while the other failed again even after using the Upgrade Advisor app.

“The Lumia 640 LTE is not successful. The Upgrade Advisor app claims that a Windows 10 update is not available despite the fact that this device had upgraded from WP 8.1 to Win 10 multiple times before and the advisor help page still claims that the 640 is supported.”

Other users reported the same problem with other Lumia models, including the 950 XL as well as other smartphones running on Windows.

One of Microsoft’s support engineers and forum moderators advised users to plug in their mobile phones while conducting the download to ensure the devices are fully charged.

However, this interim fix did not work for some, which forced engineers to investigate further.

Fortunately, they were able to pinpoint that the source bug only occurs on devices running on Windows 10 Mobile build 14946 and were able to provide the following fix.

FASTEST

According to Microsoft, the quickest way to force the update to time out is by following these steps:

  1. Plug in the device into a charger.
  2. Go to Settings, then Update Security. From there, open the Windows Insider Program and change the device speed from Slow to Fast.
  3. After that, switch to Airplane mode through Settings > Network & Wireless > Airplane Mode.
  4. Proceed to Settings > Time & Language > Date & Time where you should turn off the “Set date and time automatically.” After that, change the days on your mobile phone into 7 days in advance.
  5. Go back to the Home screen and reboot the device.
  6. After successfully rebooting, switch off the Airplane mode and then check for updates via Settings > Update & Security > Phone update > Check for updates.
  7. Expect to see an error code for this process.
  8. Change the device to the correct date and check for updates again. It is okay if this fails again.
  9. Reboot the device and then check for updates once more. This should successfully begin download of Windows 10 Mobile build 14951.

While most are expected to succeed in the update, some users reported getting error code 80242006 during the final check for updates. Microsoft vowed to continue probing this issue and included the following additional steps to bypass the error message:

  • Switch Insider setting to Slow ring
  • Check for updates (will say you are up-to-date for the Slow ring)
  • Change back to Fast ring
  • Check for updates again and it should update

EASIEST BUT LONGEST

There is also an easy but time-consuming way of bypassing the download bug. The device needs to timeout for five days and get updated to metadata. After that, the download of Build 14951 should proceed without any hitch.

MEDIUM WORK

Another bug fix is conducting a factory reset on the device on Build 14946 via Settings > System > About > Reset your phone. After doing so, the update patch download should go without any errors.

MOST WORK

This bug fix method is less optimal, but is advisable for those who have already rolled back to older builds. If your device is running on Windows 10 Version 1511, or Windows 10 Anniversary Update using WDRT, you should not encounter the patch download error.

Microsoft expects to resolve this issue soon and disclosed their plan on changing the way Build 14951 is published so that similar instances won’t happen again.

“We are making a change to how Build 14951 is published, so that Insiders can avoid hitting this issue. We will also make the same changes when we published the next build so Insiders do not hit this when upgrading to newer builds.”
