“Weird Al” Yankovic Nails The 2016 Presidential Election With One Perfect Video

“Weird Al” Yankovic can make any topic a parody, including the third presidential debate. The comic musician, who has been making spoofs of popular songs since the mid-1980s, added a little levity to the 2016 presidential race by creating a political song that perfectly encompassed the weird chaos that is Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

“Bad Hombres Nasty Women: The Presidential Debate in Song” by Yankovic and the Gregory Brothers takes the most contentious parts of the debate and turns them into a melodic ride in B-flat minor. Yankovic’s tune features Trump’s now famous “nasty woman” interruption against Clinton, Clinton’s slight calling Trump a Russian regime “puppet,” and “Weird Al” is caught in the middle of the fray as the moderator in this alternative universe debate.

Yankovic’s take on the election was so spot on that the New York Times reported that it actually ripped a hole through the fabric of space and time and sucked the accordion virtuoso onto the debate stage. Of course, that’s only true in the video. “Weird Al” inserts himself into the middle of a playing field no one would enter. He is there refereeing Clinton and Trump as they attack each other for control of the United States.

The entire video for “Bad Hombres Nasty Women” is basically a much more palatable recap of the third presidential debate. The third debate came as a finale to an utterly bizarre election season between the two presidential candidates, and Yankovic’s surreal and absurd video makes it all that much better. It at least allows the audience to pretend this really is a farce and not the possible reality of the country.

The parody artist’s song latches onto two of the most meme-worthy moments of the third debate. While discussing a question about immigration, Trump touted his usual strong borders policy, but added, “But we have some bad hombres here and we’re going to get ’em out,” CNN reported.

Trump’s “nasty woman” comment against Clinton has also had a ripple effect since the debate. The insult has acted like a feminist call to arms, and many women have adopted the “nasty woman” moniker in protest to Trump’s intended slight. Even after the debate, someone bought the rights to nastywomengetshitdone.com and rerouted it to Hillary Clinton’s campaign website.

Yankovic also takes some of Trump’s famously odd word choices, including using the word “bigly” as an adjective, and makes it a hilarious punchline in “Bad Hombres Nasty Women.” The artist also lets the viewer really enjoy the strange faces each candidate makes while they’re trying to hold their tongues during tense moments of the debate.

“Weird Al,” who has earned respect and ire from musicians over the last three decades, has remained quiet during this election season until now. The artist released his last album, “Mandatory Fun,” in 2014 with a plan to continue his musical career by only releasing singles.

Yankovic made a name for himself in the 80s and 90s by spoofing popular songs, but by 2016, the music landscape had changed his approach. Songs became immediately available and also more ephemeral, making it difficult for “Weird Al” to release his takes in a timely manner. Since Yankovic has moved to one-off releases, his songs are extremely topical, hence the release of “Bad Hombres Nasty Women.”

When people are exhausted from listening to the debates, this is the perfect song for the masses. Yankovic does an excellent job pairing the nominee’s comments with his own wacky characterizations as moderator. The whole song actually does a great job tying together the highlights of the debate, and “Weird Al” might want to consider doing an entire political series.

Neither candidate has commented on the “Weird Al” video yet, but if Clinton is still on her millennial game, she could do a feature with Yankovic a la her “Between 2 Ferns” interview.
