Ben Seewald: Duggar Son-In-Law Says White Christians Are Out Of Touch

Ben Seewald, a Duggar son-in-law, is continuing his streak of political statements that clash sharply with the evangelistic, conservative views associated with his wife’s famous family. In his latest rant, Seewald shocked some followers and thrilled others by saying that white Christians are out of touch and need to repent for not recognizing the struggles of black people in America.

Whoa. Take a moment to remember that back when Ben’s wife, Jessa Seewald, was a Duggar, she posted a lengthy explanation about racism, blaming education in evolution for the Holocaust and modern racism. Considering that, Ben’s recent step into a more liberal view of race relations is pretty staggering.

Let’s be clear; it’s not the first time Ben Seewald has spoken out with a point of view opposite to that of other Duggar political stances. Aside from addressing Black Lives Matter issues, Seewald has called on Duggar fans to stop insulting President Obama and suggested that supporting the Republican presidential nominee isn’t the Christian approach to making America great.

Now, Seewald is speaking out again about racial injustice in America. On Ben’s Instagram Saturday evening, he posted the following.

“Its so appalling how out of touch many white believers are with their black brothers and sisters in the faith (and Hispanic and others as well). It makes me want to weep. I see so much quick judgment and so little empathy. The flesh points a finger — but Jesus would have us seek unity and walk a mile in each other’s shoes. Love demands this. Christ demands this. We must repent…but the sad thing is that so many are so preoccupied that they don’t even see it as an issue.”

Ben Seewald’s followers were not all pleased. Some responded with the hashtag #PoliceLivesMatter, admonishments for the Duggar-in-law to ‘get educated’ and accusations that Ben wanted to cause trouble.

On the other hand, some Duggar fans declared that Seewald’s view is the best part of the Duggar family’s reality show.

“Thanks Ben Seewald. I’m a 47 year old black mom of 2. You’re one of the main reasons I watch. Your authenticity is refreshing.”

For many, there was only one point to get to, and that was to ask if this means Ben is voting for Hillary Clinton? He isn’t responding to that, and he’s already said a political candidate of either party would not be the saving grace of America.

The question of how the Duggar family members vote has been a recurring one this election, since they are usually quite vocal about their political views, and they have been unusually quiet since Mike Huckabee dropped out of the race. Duggar fans question how the family could support Donald Trump, who has had multiple marriages, allegations of sexual abuse, and refuses to name a favorite Bible verse. Trump isn’t exactly the picture of a conservative Christian candidate.

At least one Duggar family member has declared for Donald Trump to the consternation of some fans. Jim Bob Duggar’s other son-in-law, Derick Dillard, didn’t respond to the barrage of questions asking how he could support Trump after this exchange, though.

What’s the end result of a Duggar family member supporting the Black Lives Matter movement? Maybe a little diversity in belief promotes the show and grabs more attention, or maybe it turns away some long-time viewers. It’s clear many of them don’t agree with Ben. Maybe it results in Jim Bob Duggar orchestrating a reduction of Ben’s presence in the show, or a major divide.

One thing is clear, though. Ben Seewald is the first person associated with the Duggar clan to speak out in support of the movement, and it’s definitely a very visible contrast with the rest of the family.
