WWE News: Reason Why Asuka Isn’t Defending NXT Women’s Title Against NXT Star Revealed

Even though WWE NXT wasn’t the developmental league the fans thought it was, the brand has turned around careers and even built stars that may have never gotten that chance elsewhere. The men’s division is a one-stop shop for indy stars around the world to make a name for themselves on the main stage. Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose are the first, true examples of that phenomena. With The Shield, Rollins and Ambrose ran roughshod through the WWE and have become WWE champions.

Other established indy stars, like Finn Balor, finally got a chance to make a name for themselves in the biggest wrestling promotion in the world. While Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling do good business and have a loyal following, they don’t compare to the WWE when offering the full package. That’s one big reason why AJ Styles left New Japan for the WWE. Not only is the money better, but they can promote to more than just one region.

That’s just the men who’ve made a huge impact in the WWE. WWE NXT women make history on an annual basis and it’s not stopping anytime soon. What began as Paige and Summer Rae turned into a Women’s Revolution and the dismissal of the term “Diva.” Paige and Summer were able to begin a legacy strengthened by Sasha Banks, Charlotte, Becky Lynch, and Bayley. They are the main event, while women like Dana Brooke, Peyton Royce, Billie Kay, and more solidify it and create a never-ending path of greatness.

When the Four Horsewomen left for the main roster, one woman stayed behind to lead the pack of new talent to the next level. Asuka, the current-NXT Women’s champion, is undefeated in the WWE and has beaten every challenger thrown her way. Then, along came Mickie James. The WWE broke the news over a week ago and it was a shock to the entire WWE Universe. According to Daily Wrestling News and the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the reason why Asuka isn’t facing an NXT star at NXT Toronto is revealed.

“The announcement of Mickie vs. Asuka had a lot of fans wondering why Asuka wasn’t defending against a current NXT roster member. The idea behind Asuka’s match at Takeover was that she would go at Trish as a strong heel to allow Ember Moon to be a stronger babyface against Asuka, instead of the athletic competition angle Asuka vs. Bayley had.

“WWE has confirmed that Mickie vs. Asuka will be for the title. There’s still no word yet on Mickie’s post-Takeover future but as of last week, she was back just for this match, which could easily change.”

As the report suggests, the WWE originally wanted Trish Stratus to be in the role James is currently filling. Due to Stratus being pregnant with her second child, she obviously won’t be able to compete in the ring anytime soon. It was also in Toronto, Stratus’ hometown. So, the WWE went with plan B, as it were, and asked James to wrestle Asuka at NXT Takeover: Toronto.

In a recent article by the Inquisitr, a main roster jump for Asuka could be in the near future. As a former star in New Japan Pro Wrestling, Asuka has maintained the star power left by the Four Horsewomen and even excelled in her role as NXT Women’s champion.

There’s no doubt that Mickie James will put over Asuka in the best way possible, so that Ember Moon presumably sweeps in and takes the title at a later date. That would be best for business in WWE NXT.
