‘The Walking Dead’ Season 7 Premiere: The Case For Glenn Dying

The countdown to the Walking Dead Season 7 premiere has begun, and the case for Glenn dying at the hand, actually the bat, of Negan is pretty strong. The theory that he will be the character we see die tonight is among the most popular. Let’s see why.

What some see as the strongest argument for Glenn dying in the Walking Dead Season 7 premiere is the fact that, as Vox noted, it’s his character that Negan kills in the comic books upon which the TV series is based, specifically in Issue 100. Of course, the show doesn’t always follow the comics. Daryl Dixon isn’t even a character in the comics. Still, Robert Kirkman wrote the comic books and is a producer of the Walking Dead TV show, and Glenn’s death was a major event in the comics. It’s easy to see why he would want to include it in the TV show.

Also, Kirkman has made some comments about tonight’s episode that indicate it is a turning point in the Walking Dead show. He told The Hollywood Reporter,

“This is a thematic break and there is a transition of what came before and what came next… One death should be enough for this audience and one death will definitely have the affect that we’re looking for. It will certainly set the stage for a very exciting season. It’s going to be a rough, rough, rough episode emotionally. Knowing what’s coming and knowing what happens, it’s really hard for me to watch.”

So this episode is meant to be as significant and powerful as Issue 100 of the Walking Dead comic books. Glenn’s death achieved that in the comics, and it would achieve that in the TV show.

And then there is some possible foreshadowing from Season 5 of The Walking Dead. The photo that is shown at the top of this article, the one that serves as the header, is from Episode 9 of that season. As you can see, it shows Glenn holding a baseball bat. This could be foreshadowing his death when Negan hits him with his bat named Lucille.

A third supporting item is something from the people at The Spoiling Dead. They posted a list of characters and the episodes in which each one appears. Check it out below.

‘The Walking Dead’ Season 7 Spoilers: Negan Victims Revealed, How Will It All Go Down?

Two characters will appear only in Episode 1, and Glenn is one of them. I know, I know. There are lots of “spoilers” out there that turn out to be totally false, but The Spoiling Dead has a really good track record with these things. In fact, their track record is so good that people associated with The Walking Dead have threatened legal action in the past. So it’s worth taking this piece of information with more than a grain of salt.

The “Sneak Peek” video that The Walking Dead released recently also provides some clues that support this theory. Here’s the video in case you missed it.

Two clues that point to Glenn in this are the blood on Rick’s face and Negan’s use of the term “right-hand man.” First, the blood on Rick’s face. It’s on his right, which probably means the death blow probably was inflicted on someone to his right. Glenn is to Rick’s right. Yes, he was on the end, but many have theorized that Negan goes after someone else, maybe Abraham, and Glenn intervenes, so Negan kills him too.

The second clue from the Walking Dead sneak peek video is that Negan talks about Rick’s right-hand man in a way that leads us to think he has killed Rick’s right-hand man. Who would that be from Negan’s perspective? Very possibly that could be Glenn.

And one more thing, several people from The Walking Dead appeared at the New York Comic-Con recently. Among them was Lauren Cohan, who plays Maggie. When asked about Season 7, she became emotional. Some have taken that as a sign that Maggie will die. But would The Walking Dead really kill off a pregnant woman in this way? Probably not. But Lauren could have been emotional because of Glenn’s death. She and Steven Yeun have worked together so closely, and they had to have become good friends. It’s easy to see why his departure from the show would be emotional for her.

Check out The Walking Dead tonight at 9 p.m. ET on FX, and learn the truth.
