‘Star Wars Episode VIII’ Spoilers: Daisy Ridley Hints Viewers Will Discover Rey’s Parentage In Upcoming Sequel

Star Wars Episode VIII is still a year away but fans of the franchise are already clamoring to know one very significant detail, and that is Rey’s (Daisy Ridley) parentage.

The question about Rey’s origins sprung up as soon as Star Wars: The Force Awakens came out.

In the first installment of the new trilogy, Rey was introduced as a scavenger living on the desert planet of Jakku. She was abandoned there as a child not knowing why her family left her there or if they’ll ever come back for her.

If those were the only details to her character, the audience would have surmised that she’s just another person in a galaxy far, far away.

But seeing that she also wields the power of the Force some fans theorized that perhaps she is the long-lost daughter of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) or possibly a distant relative of Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness/Ewan McGregor).

Unfortunately, the people behind the franchise are capable of keeping a secret, and so far no one has been able to get any details from the cast or the crew on the upcoming Star Wars Episode VIII.

Until now.

A hint of what’s to come

Before getting into the upcoming sequel to The Force Awakens, Ridley, 24, spoke first about her new film.

The Eagle Huntress is a documentary about a young girl who became the first female eagle hunter in Mongolia and Ridley was excited to be involved in the film because she was inspired by its main subject.

“I was deeply moved by Aisholpan’s story and wanted to be a part of this beautiful film,” she said.

Ridley spoke of the young girl’s journey into becoming the first female eagle hunter in her country, and she said that Aisholpan’s story could serve as an inspiration to young women everywhere.

Not surprisingly, Ridley also became a role model for young girls when she took on the role of Rey and in the upcoming sequel her emergence as a strong force to be reckoned with will be much more evident seeing that her character might become a true Jedi Knight now that Rey has found Luke Skywalker.

The possibility of Rey becoming a Jedi is just one of several questions that are going through the heads of numerous fans of the epic space saga. But the most persistent question they want answered is “who exactly are Rey’s parents?”

Fortunately, it seems that Daisy Ridley’s interview with Vulture might finally shed some light on that matter.

According to Vulture, Ridley kept a tight lid on the details of Star Wars Episode VIII, but she didn’t leave the interviewer empty-handed. When Vulture asked her if Rey is related to Obi-Wan Kenobi, she simply said that fans would find out in a year.

Ridley may not have shared any details about the upcoming sequel, but at least she said that viewers would find out soon enough if Rey is related to any of the Jedi Knights.

One theory that has been popping up lately is that Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), the lead character in the upcoming Star Wars spin-off Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, is Rey’s mother.

Vulture told Ridley that theory and the English actress mulled it over to figure out if that was possible. Ridley said that though the theory was interesting it wouldn’t be possible at least according to the timeline in the Star Wars universe.

She explained that Jyn Erso would have to be her grandmother because she shares a timeline with Darth Vader who is already Kylo Ren’s (Adam Driver) grandfather. So it’s a bit of a stretch to say that Erso is Rey’s mom.

Although she didn’t rule it out.

“I mean it could happen, especially in a galaxy far, far away,” was all Ridley said.

As for Rey’s real parents, it’s only a matter of time before everyone learns who they are and though it’s still a long wait at least Daisy Ridley confirmed that everyone will find out when Star Wars Episode VIII comes out.
