Jets coach Rex Ryan made the announcement on Friday, adding that Revis will undergo surgery next week to repair the torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee suffered almost three weeks ago at Miami.

“I know I had said before about Darrelle that I’d like to wait for him to have surgery before we placed him on IR or not,” Ryan told reporters on Friday. “Unfortunately with that time situation, you’ve had Eric Smith being out this week, we’re going to need that roster spot.”

Revis, 27, will have surgery October 18. Ryan had previously indicated that doctors wanted to strengthen the athlete’s knee before he underwent the operation.

Revis’ ACL tear came without contact as he tried to change direction and make a tackle with 3:54 left in the third quarter of the Jets’ 23-20 victory at the Miami Dolphins on September 23.

Prior to the injury, the four-time Pro Bowler had recorded 11 tackles and one interception on the season.

In related news, the Jets also announced wide receiver Santonio Holmes had surgery earlier this week for his Week 4 foot injury that landed him on IR.

However, tight end Dustin Keller, who has missed four games with a hamstring injury, and rookie wide receiver Stephen Hill, sidelined two games with an injured hamstring, are likely to return to the Jets lineup in their upcoming game against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.
