Anne Hathaway Oscar Win: Actress Says She Was Only Acting Happy About Award

Anne Hathaway’s Oscar win wasn’t the joyous occasion she’d tried to make it look. The actress even claims she was embarrassed by the public attention during her acceptance of the Academy Award for Les Miserables.

Most Hollywood celebrities go decades in their career just hoping for the chance to be nominated for an Academy Award. This past year marked one in particular whose win had been considered long overdue. Leonardo DiCaprio had snagged one of the coveted miniature statues after years of being overlooked in critically acclaimed films over and over.

People were happy to see Leo finally get his Oscar, but Anne Hathaway felt extremely uncomfortable, as she told the Guardian.

“I kind of lost my mind doing that movie and it hadn’t come back yet. Then I had to stand up in front of people and feel something I don’t feel which is uncomplicated happiness.”

Why would Hathaway feel that way? It’s because she had encountered the public’s general opinion of her while she was filming the role which won her the award. According to MSN, there is a community on the internet known as “hathahaters,” whose feelings toward Anne are rather obvious by the name they gave themselves.

Apparently, Hathaway decided to put her heart into her role in Les Miserables, and combining the pain of the character she played with the realization that the public has grown to hate her, it put her in a state of shock. Some seemed to notice her faked happiness when she won the Oscar.

“It’s an obvious thing, you win an Oscar and you’re supposed to be happy. I didn’t feel that way. I felt wrong that I was standing there in a gown that cost more than some people are going to see in their lifetime, and winning an award for portraying pain that still felt very much a part of our collective experience as human beings. I tried to pretend that I was happy and I got called out on it, big time. That’s the truth and that’s what happened. It sucks. But what you learn from it is that you only feel like you can die from embarrassment, you don’t actually die.”

Anne Hathaway has been balancing her acting career with the real-life role of being a mother, she says, and it “takes up all my time.” She’s been so busy, in fact, that she hasn’t even seen most of the movies she’s in, nor had she given much thought toward critical and public opinions surrounding them. The Dark Knight Rises was one of those films, and it was the least liked among Christopher Nolan’s trilogy.

Admittedly, most of the hate toward that film was directed at Christian Bale’s overdone growl and facial expression when doing it, an aspect which has inspired countless parodies across the internet. One of the most famous of them is a series featuring comedian Pete Holmes as a dim-witted idiot in a Batman suit.

Anne Hathaway has expressed her awareness that if her movies aren’t well liked, it’s not because the filmmakers had the express intent to make a bad movie. Aside from Uwe Boll, most directors try to make the best film they can. Even Adam Sandler and Michael Bay, two of the most hated directors of our time, don’t intend to make bad movies.

The actress claims that if her time in the spotlight is destroyed over the general public’s hatred toward her, she has other options. She even joked about being a “professional drunk,” which she plays in her upcoming film Colossal, which is a kind of satirical monster movie poking fun at the tropes.

Anne Hathaway knows she’s hated, and it’s taking some time to get over that. Her Oscar moment reflected it, apparently.
