A Canadian tourist was among the 119 passengers rescued from an ill-fated passenger ship which sank Sunday evening 9 miles (15 kilometers) off the province of Zamboanga del Norte in the Philippines. The Superferry 9 had 964 passengers and crew on board when it departed from Zamboanga early Saturday. Of the number 819 were officially listed as passengers.
The Canadian was identified as Jeffrey Predchuz. He was among the passengers and crew that were transferred to two nearby commercial vessels, a navy gunboat and fishing boat. Television footage of rescue operations showed Predchuz sustained some injuries. The Philippine Coast Guard is still searching for 33 missing people.
The vessel left the Port of General Santos City bound for Iloilo City. The authorities have started investigation of the cause of the sinking. While there is no storm when the ship left port, passengers reported violent waves and observed the ship tiled for hours before it sank,
According to Aboitiz Transport, operator of the passenger and cargo vessel, 175 of the rescued passengers are board SuperFerry 1 on its way to Iloilo and Manila, another 179 are on SuperFerry 5 on its way to Bacolod and the rest are still in Zamboanga City. Aboitiz offered to shoulder all the expense of the passengers, including their relatives who want to check the safety of their kin. For these relatives who fear riding a SuperFerry, Aboitiz offered to shoulder their plane fare.
The Coast Guard has identified three of nine dead passengers, including a two-year old boy, a 23-year old woman and a 45-year old man. There are three dead male and three female passengers still unidentified.
