‘Red Dead Redemption 2’ Confirmed To Feature Online Multiplayer Content, Releasing As Timed Exclusive On PS4

After finally announcing that Red Dead Redemption 2 will be heading to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One next year, Rockstar Games has now officially confirmed that there will be an online multiplayer component to their upcoming western title. The feature was revealed earlier today in a post on the PlayStation Blog in which Sony announced that they would be partnering with Rockstar Games to bring new online content for Red Dead Redemption 2 to the PS4 first.

Exact details on what kind of online features would be available in Red Dead Redemption 2 weren’t discussed, but it is clear that fans should expect to see some online play involved with the game now that Sony and Rockstar Games have revealed their partnership plans for PS4 exclusivity. According to Sony, the Red Dead Redemption 2 will offer a new online multiplayer experience.

“The game’s vast and atmospheric world will also provide the foundation for a brand new online multiplayer experience.”

As the Inquisitr previously pointed out after the first trailer for Red Dead Redemption 2 gave gamers their first look at the upcoming title earlier this morning, the gameplay footage itself didn’t make any specific mention of an online mode for the game. However, that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating on a possible multiplayer mode for Red Dead Redemption 2 similar to Grand Theft Auto V‘s popular GTA Online servers.

While it is now known that there will certainly be some online features for Red Dead Redemption 2 thanks to the announcement regarding the partnership between PlayStation and Rockstar Games, it isn’t clear if the developer has as robust plans for the title’s online gameplay as they have recently shown to Grand Theft Auto. All that is definite at this point is that there will be online multiplayer content and that it will launch first on the PS4.

As part of the timed exclusivity announcement for Red Dead Redemption 2, Sony also mentioned that Rockstar Games “hand crafted” the upcoming western title specifically with the PlayStation 4 in mind. The developer hopes to use the full potential of Sony’s console which is what helped lay the groundwork for the exclusivity deal that will bring new features for Red Dead Redemption 2’s online multiplayer content to the PS4 ahead of the Xbox One version of the game. Sony’s hope is for PlayStation to become the definitive place to enjoy the game.

“Now, following up Grand Theft Auto V — one of the most successful entertainment properties of all time — Rockstar is set to return with Red Dead Redemption 2, the latest entry in the Red Dead series of games. And there’s no better place to play it than PlayStation.”

Further confirming that there will an online component to Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar Games reiterated that the title would offer an “online multiplayer experience” after launching an official website for the game. Fans can already place pre-orders on the site as well as sign up for the Rockstar mailing list to ensure that they continue to stay on top of all announcements for Red Dead Redemption 2 as development continues.

In addition to getting early access to online content for Red Dead Redemption 2, PlayStation 4 owners will also soon get their chance to replay the original Red Dead Redemption game as Sony revealed that the classic PS3 title will be available on the streaming PlayStation Now service in the coming months.

Even though Rockstar Games has made an agreement to release Red Dead Redemption 2‘s online content on the PlayStation 4 first, the game’s multiplayer mode will still make its way to the Xbox One once the temporary exclusivity period has expired. There currently aren’t any details on exactly how long these features are expected to remain exclusive on the PS4 once released.
