Fielder’s Homer Helps Brewers Avoid Giants Sweep

Milwaukee, WI (AHN) – Prince Fielder homered in the 12th inning off reliever Merkin Valdez and the Milwaukee Brewers staved off a sweep against the San Francisco Giants with a 2-1 victory Sunday at Miller Park.
Fielder connected to deep left to bring in the winning run for the Brewers, who lost the first two games of the series with identical 3-2 decisions.
Milwaukee tied the game at 1-all on Casey McGehee’s RBI single off Jonathan Sanchez, who allowed one run and three hits thru six innings, including three walks and nine strikeouts.
Mitch Stetter took the win with a perfect 10th for the Brewers. Braden Looper earned a no-decision pitching seven solid innings with one run and eight hits surrendered, including two walks and one strikeout.
San Francisco led 1-0 in the first inning with an RBI single from Pablo Sandoval, who went 1-for-3. Randy Winn and Edgar Renteria each had two hits.
The loss dropped the Giants to 1 1-2 games back of Colorado for the top NL wild-card spot.
San Francisco hosts San Diego starting Monday afternoon, with Brad Penny opposing Clayton Richard in the opener.
Milwaukee hosts St. Louis in a three-game series that also begins Monday afternoon. Dave Bush and Chris Carpenter are the starting pitchers for the series’ opener.
