Nadal, Serena Make Last 16; Clijsters Ousts Venus

Flushing, NY (AHN) – Former world no. 1 Rafael Nadal skated through a Round of 16 stint in the U.S. Open Sunday, torching No. 32 seed Nicolas Almagro in the third round with a 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 win.

The third-seeded Nadal outclassed his fellow Spaniard Almagro with another convincing performance and now heads to the final 16 against either no. 16 seed Gael Monfils or Jose Acasuso, who play later Sunday.

No. 6 seed Juan Martin Del Potro also advanced following a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Austrian Daniel Koellerer.

The Argentine next faces no. 24 Juan Carlos Ferrero, who triumphed after no. 9 seed Gilles Simon retired due to injury.

Ferrero was leading their third-round matchup 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5), 1-0 when Simon retired.

Other winners Sunday were no. 7 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and no. 11 Fernando Gonzalez, who sealed fourth-round duels against each other.

Tsonga plastered Julien Benneteau 7-6 (4), 6-2, 6-4 while Gonzalez disposed no. 17 seed Tomas Berdych 7-5, 6-4, 6-4.

In women’s play, former world no. 1 Kim Clijsters outpointed former champion Venus Williams with a gut-wrenching 6-0, 0-6, 6-4 victory also Sunday.

Clijsters, who’s making a comeback this year following her retirement in 2007, next faces no. 18 seed Li Na, a 6-2, 6-3 winner over no. 26 seed Francesca Schiavone also Sunday.

No. 2 seed Serena Williams had an easier time reaching the last 16 with a 6-2, 6-0 rout of no. 22 seed Daniela Hantuchova.

Serena, the three-time former winner, next meets either no. 7 Vera Zvonareva or no. 10 Flavia Pennetta in the next round.
