On Wednesday the company announced there was an issue with a manufacturing part and it’s possible, but unlikely, that fragments of metal mesh may be inside the cereal.

“According to Dr. David Acheson, an internal medicine physician and former Chief Medical Officer at the FDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) with whom we consulted, the likelihood of these fragments making their way into the food is low,” Kellogg’s said in a statement to the Wall Street Journal. “Furthermore, the chances that any affected food will cause injury is low.”

Per the notice filed with the US Food and Drug Administration, the recall includes 282,000 cases. Boxes included in the recall have the letters “KB,” “AP” or “FK” before or after the “Best Before” date.

Some single-serving bowls are also included in the recall.

According to the CS Monitor, this is the second nationwide recall in just over two years for the breakfast food giant, which also manufactures products including Pop Tarts, Eggo Waffles, breakfast bars, and a wide variety of well-known cereal brands.

In 2010, Kellogg’s recalled four cereal brands – Fruit Loops, Corn Pops, Apple Jacks, and Honey Smacks – after consumers reported a strange odour and taste, with some experiencing nausea and diarrhea.

The WSJ points out that Kellogg’s has already spent $100 million in 2012 to correct problems with its supply chain, and the latest recall will set them back another estimated $30 million.
