Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez May Renew Romance, But Did He Cause Her ‘Downward Spiral’?

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are in an “off” phase of their on-again, off-again romantic relationship, but that isn’t stopping Jelena fans from hoping that the two will rekindle their romance someday soon. Justin recently ended his short romance with Sofia Richie, adding to his single-and-ready-to-mingle possibilities. But his former girlfriend is in rehab, with rumors about what caused her to check in for treatment ranging from a battle with Bieber to mental health concerns.

Prior to the “Kill ‘Em With Kindness” singer’s decision to seek treatment, she “hit rock bottom,” according to In Touch, which cited an insider who detailed what happened.

“If anyone knew how bad she was, they’d be in shock.”

Moreover, the source revealed that the move to rehab resulted from a “downward spiral,” alleging that Selena “couldn’t stop drinking and partying.” Her mom reportedly played a role in keeping the details of her treatment as private as possible, however, according to the insider.

“[Brookhaven, an all-women’s facility] guarantees plenty of privacy because of the trees and fields around it,” noted the source. “Her mom has kept the circumstances very secret.”

As for other issues contributing to that “downward spiral,” In Touch also listed “alcohol abuse, excessive partying and her mental health,” alleging that she spent time in a “mental hospital” prior to checking into Brookhaven, where she is expected to stay “for a few months.”

While In Touch‘s source cites a series of issues that resulted in Gomez’s stay in rehab, Life & Style‘s insider revealed that Selena herself is blaming Justin. Bieber has caused her to feel “backed into a corner,” shared the source, who linked the pop princess’ problems to Justin’s romance with Sofia Richie.

“It was really hard for her. She saw Justin looking so happy and that really sent her into a downward spiral.”

But now that Bieber and Richie have split, is it possible that Selena and Justin could rekindle their romance? A look at the timeline of their love offers some hints about what previously caused their break-up and make-up phases.

Seventeen points out that even though Bieber and Gomez have a “rocky” relationship, no one knows whether it’s actually over yet.

Justin’s and Selena’s social media battle following the “Sorry” singer’s very public romance with Sofia, which included both Bieber and Richie posting photos highlighting their love for each other, exposed some of the issues in the Jelena relationship, however.

But their relationship timeline has a pattern of romantic gestures, such as the November 2015 reunion in Los Angeles when Justin serenaded Selena with “Sorry” and “My Girl” at a hotel.

Cosmopolitan noted that Justin’s and Selena’s love story goes all the way back to 2009, after Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun contacted her mother to inform her that the Biebs was interested in her daughter. In February 2011, Bieber and Gomez stunned in their first appearance as a duo at the Oscars.

Their first breakup occurred in November 2012, with Justin subsequently going on a series of dates with Victoria’s Secret supermodels and Selena confessing she would like to date Zayn Malik. But the following year, Jelena fans went wild when Bieber shared a photo of himself with Gomez.

In September 2015, Selena revealed that she would forever love Justin, admitting she wasn’t sure about the possibility of a reunion.

“I’ll forever support him and love him in a way that…. we grew up together. I think people want it to be different.”

Bieber also mused about what happened in their relationship, recalling that they were “so in love” and contending that the intensity was too much.

“We were so in love. Nothing else mattered. We were all about each other. But when it’s like that and you get your value from that, people will always disappoint you,” he opined. “Your girl or your dude, they’re always going to disappoint you.”

Ouch. But despite those statements, the hints that their Jelena romance could be rekindled have continued, with Bieber sharing throwback photos of himself with Selena, and the “Kill ‘Em With Kindness” singer congratulating Justin on his Grammy win in February 2016.

The ultimate breakdown in communication between Selena and Justin seemed to occur in August 2016, however. After he was hit by criticism from fans about photos of his then-gal pal Sofia, Justin issued a threat.

“I’m gonna make my Instagram private if you guys don’t stop the hate this is getting out of hand, if you guys are really fans you wouldn’t be so mean to people that I like,” wrote Bieber on Instagram.

Gomez then commented on his statement.

“If you can’t handle the hate then stop posting pictures of your girlfriend,” she recommended. “Don’t be mad at your fans. They love and supported you before any one ever did.”

Justin showed hostility in his response, accusing her of using him to get attention for herself.

“It’s funny to see people that used me for attention and still try to point the finger this way.”

But Gomez didn’t take the criticism without a fight, alleging that he had cheated.

“Funny how the ones that cheated multiple times, are the ones pointing the finger at the ones that were forgiving and supportive. No wonder fans are mad,”she responded.

Bieber wrapped up the battle by bringing up Zayn Malik’s name.

“I cheated… Oh I forgot about You and Zayn?” questioned Justin.

Since that battle, Bieber has exited Instagram, while Gomez has entered rehab. But as their love timeline shows, the two have a history of fighting and forgetting.

So is it too late for Justin to say (or sing) “Sorry” to Selena? What do you think? Post your comments below.
