‘This Is Us’ Spoilers: How The Pearson Family’s Fractured Relationships Will Play Out This Season

This Is Us has been this season’s most talked about new show, and it sounds like there will be plenty more for fans to talk about and analyze as the rookie series has already been picked up for a full season. In an interview with Us Weekly, This Is Us star Chrissy Metz, who plays Kate on the show, said viewers should keep the tissues handy because there are plenty of tear-jerking scenes coming up on the NBC drama.

First of all, Metz says the complicated relationship between Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and her son’s biological father William (Ron Cephas Jones) will play out in more detail.

“You’ll definitely start to discover and figure out what’s been going on and why and how,” Chrissy told Us. “It plays out, I think, in a timely fashion, but you will find out sooner than later.”

In addition, the end of Rebecca and Jack’s (Milo Ventimiglia) marriage will be addressed. Metz said the cast does know what happened to this couple that was very much married in 1980, and viewers will eventually find out how Rebecca ended up with Jack’s friend, Miguel (Jon Huertas).

“We do know what’s going on and you will eventually find out what is going to happen. I don’t know how much they’ve solidified, but we do know,” Metz revealed.

This Is Us star Mandy Moore has also talked about the demise of her character’s marriage. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Moore promised that the story will be a heartbreaker.

“You’ll find out more as to what happens to Jack and Rebecca and why in 2016 they’re no longer together,” Mandy told THR. “What happens to them, what breaks them apart… it’s pretty heartbreaking…I was pretty devastated to see they don’t end up together.”

Ventimiglia talked about the twist to E! News, teasing that fans will see the full spectrum of the triplet’s parents’ rocky relationship.

“We’re going to see a couple in their high moments and then also in their low moments,” Ventimiglia told E! “So the fact that it’s present day and Jack is not grandpa, that’s looking in the distance and being like, oh, I see where I’m going but I can’t quite see the road around the mountain. You’re going to find out, you’re going to learn about it.”

Because present day Rebecca is still wearing the necklace that Jack gave her, it’s easy to jump to the conclusion that Jack died. But showrunner Dan Fogelman has already teased that we may see Ventimiglia’s character as an old man sometime in the future.

“He’s game,” Fogelman told Entertainment Weekly of the actor. “We haven’t shot old Milo yet… [but] both Mandy and Milo strangely can float through different periods easily, and it feels very authentic.”

The story behind Kate’s insecurities will also unfold. Metz told Us that her character was very confident and headstrong until something happened to her when she was younger.

“You see this incident happens, and her self-confidence starts to fade even though Jack, as her father, wanted to just love her unconditionally,” Metz teased.

Fans will see the family’s struggles as a young family in this week’s episode, titled “The Pool.” According to the episode synopsis posted by the Futon Critic, the Pearsons will face backlash as a blended family when they go to a community pool for the day. The episode will also detail Kevin’s (Justin Hartley) plans to try to make it big on Broadway, and Kate’s stunned reaction when she sees the ex-wife of her boyfriend Toby (Chris Sullivan).
