Federer Outlasts Hewitt To Enter US Open Final 16, Djokovic Advances

Flushing Meadows, NY (AHN) – World No. 1 Roger Federer continued his dominance of 31st-seed Australian Lleyton Hewitt with a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 third-round victory on Saturday at the U.S. Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The reigning five time champion Federer battled back from a set down and unleashed 15 aces among his 51 winners to beat his Australian foe to remain unbeaten in their last 14 matchups dating back to 2004.

Federer, who has not lost in this tournament since 2003, shook off 59 unforced errors in besting the 2001 champion Hewitt, who made 37 errors in the match that lasted in 2 hours, 33 minutes

The 15-time Swiss champion is now 16-7 lifetime against Hewitt, who managed 26 winners in the setback.

Federer will next play either 14th- seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo or 21st-seeded American James Blake in the round 16.

Fourth-seeded Serbian Novak Djokovic also booked a final 16 spot after crushing American qualifier Jesse Witten 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Radek Stepanek also made it into the final 16. The fifteenth-seeded Czech outclassed 23rd-seeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3.

Other top 10 seed actions slated on Saturday include No. 8 seed Nikolay Davydenko, No. 5 seed Andy Roddick and 10th-seeded Fernando Verdasco.

The power-serving Roddick would be tested by fellow American John Isner, who is also regarded for his power shots, while Verdasco will square off against No. 20th seed Tommy Haas at Armstrong Stadium.

Davydenko currently leads Marco Chiudinelli 6-4, 1-4.
