Rihanna’s Surprise Duet With Paul McCartney At ‘Desert Trip’ Brings Young Blood To ‘Oldchella’ [Video]

Rihanna made a surprise onstage appearance alongside rock ‘n roll legend Paul McCartney this weekend at “Desert Trip,” the Palm Springs festival so full of classic musicians that some have come to refer to the event as Oldchella. McCartney was performing for the second weekend in a row when he started to introduce Rihanna to the audience as “the queen of Barbados.”

Rihanna joined Sir Paul for a rendition of “Four Five Seconds,” and McCartney joked that Rihanna’s appearance finally brought someone under the age of 50 onstage much to the delight of the crowd. “Four Five Seconds” is the song McCartney and Rihanna had recorded last year together with Kanye West, according to Billboard. McCartney fans were also treated to a duet between Paul and Neil Young.

Rihanna took a book out of Bob Dylan’s fashion pages, wearing a suit with no shirt. Dylan had performed shirtless earlier during the “Desert Trip” festival, though he didn’t quite have Rihanna’s curves.

The Desert Trip/Oldchella festival received rave reviews for its initial weekend. Headlined by Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, The Who, and Bob Dylan, the two-weekend festival initially sold out rather quickly; however, after market sales ticket prices had plummeted leaving some to wonder if the old guys performing just didn’t have the chops to be marketable. After last week’s reviews about the performances, however, young and old alike flocked back for the second weekend and though some in the audience may be wondering who Rihanna was, the bridging of two acts like McCartney and Rihanna was met with much joy from true music fans.

The appearance with McCartney at “Desert Trip” was probably a nice relief for Rihanna after another week of scrutiny over her personal relationships. Rumors began to surface that former lover and Rihanna abuser Chris Brown was at odds with Rihanna’s newest ex-boyfriend Drake. Rihanna has been said to be moving on without either man, with no interest in failed relationships. According to Vogue, Rihanna’s relationship with Drake has been complicated for years as the two struggle between a personal relationship and their professional collaborations. And Rihanna’s previous history with Chris Brown dominated tabloids for quite some time as Brown was arrested for physically harming her.

Putting her personal life strife aside, however, Rihanna has found much professional success. At 28-years-old, Rihanna has sold over 200 million records and collaborated with some of the music industry’s top talent including Eminem, Britney Spears, Jay Z, and of course Paul McCartney. Along with her music career, Rihanna has ventured into acting with roles in Battleship, This is the End, and the lead character in the animated film Home. As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Rihanna will join Anne Hathaway and Sandra Bullock in Oceans Eight, the all-female version of Oceans Eleven.

Though Rihanna is currently getting ready to wrap up her lengthy “Anti-World Tour” for 2016, it was nice to see her take some time out and hang with a legendary musician of Paul McCartney’s caliber. The young music listeners may think that Rihanna gave Sir Paul some cool points but in reality, it was McCartney who boosted Rihanna up a bit. After all, without the forefathers of rock like Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger, the Rihannas of the world might not have had the opportunities they do today.
