‘Narcos’ Season 3 Teaser Photo: Filming Has Begun, Moves On From Pablo Escobar

Narcos has been renewed for Season 3 and 4. One of the last scenes in Narcos Season 2 features Javier Pena and so does the teaser photo. Therefore, it is safe to say that the DEA agent played by Pedro Pascal will return next season.

The teaser photo’s caption reveals the series desire to move on from Pablo Escobar and move on to the ongoing drug war. It reads, “The blow must go on. Pablo might be dead but the war is not over. Season 3 of #Narcos has begun filming.”

It appears that Javier Pena is holding a press conference about Pablo Escobar’s death as the DEA and Colombian authorities deal with the fallout.

The Narcos Season 3 teaser also reveals that the Cali Cartel are taking up the mantle and will be the new drug lords reigning over Colombia.

Gilberto and Miguel Rodriguez are the Cali Cartel brothers who are seen in Narcos as both Pablo’s friend and foe. Pacho Herrera is also featured in the series as one of the bosses. A fourth member will be introduced to the cast in Narcos Season 3.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the television producer, Eric Newman, revealed that there will be a lot of new cast members in the upcoming installment of the show.

“I’d liken it to season two in that there were a lot of new characters…. It’s a multiple narrative so there will be a number of new stories that hopefully will be captivating.”

The Cali Cartel will take a different approach to the drug trade and will have more success at getting into politics than Pablo Escobar.

Eric Newman referred to the Cali Cartel as “more pervasive and more insidious” and states that the drug lords had a “corruptive influence that went way beyond the outlaw.”

He continues on about how the Cali Cartel operates and why it is different to what Pablo Escobar managed to accomplish.

“They bought the presidency of Colombia in 1994. They were insiders, and it’s very much a response to the level of violence that the hunt for Escobar brought to Colombia. We’re inheriting an administration in government and populous in Colombia that were tired of the violence and that changed the way they were going to wage the war, so it’s a more complicated environment in ways. It’s difficult to tell the good guys from the bad guys.”

While the Pablo Escobar arc lasted two seasons, he was successful for a very long time and managed to rule the Colombia drug trade for over 15 years.

The Cali Cartel didn’t last as long, so their arc will probably be just for Narcos Season 3. An interesting development is their alleged involvement in the Mexican drug trade, and producer Eric Newman teased that the show could head in that direction.

“Cali was the cartel that really utilized the smuggling routes through Mexico and the Mexican heroin smugglers who were already incredibly successful,” said Newman. “They very much got the Mexicans into the cocaine business, so there is sort of a natural evolution there. As to whether or not I would move directly into Mexico, it’s certainly a possibility.”

Since the series is sort of continuing where Pablo Escobar left off, it is possible to conclude that the series will follow the war on drugs up to present day. The showrunners have joked that they will not run out of material as long as the ongoing war on drugs continues.

There is a lot to look forward to in Narcos Season 3, are you looking forward to it?
