‘Westworld’ Episode 3 Predictions: A New Backstory, A Missing Host And The Origin Of Madness Is Explored

Episode 3 of HBO’s Westworld sees Teddy getting a new backstory and Bernard trying to work out why some of the hosts are hallucinating. All in all, it seems like just another crazy day in Westworld.

Spoiler alert: This article discusses Season 1 of HBO’s Westworld. Please proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers.

Episode 3 of HBO’s Westworld is titled “The Stray.” The synopsis below hints at why the episode was given this title, with Elsie and Stubbs heading into Westworld to find a missing host.

“Elsie (Woodward) and Stubbs (Hemsworth) head into the hills in pursuit of a missing host. Teddy (Marsden) gets a new backstory, which sets him off in pursuit of a new villain, leaving Dolores (Wood) alone in Sweetwater. Bernard (Wright) investigates the origins of madness and hallucinations within the hosts. William (Simpson) finds an attraction he’d like to pursue and drags Logan (Barnes) along for the ride.”

It is unclear which host Elsie and Stubbs are searching for. However, considering what happened in Episode 2 of Westworld, it is possible they could be looking for Maeve, since she is the only other host we know of who has been infected and might go wandering. Of course, if that theory about the Man in Black being a host is true, perhaps that is who they are searching for?

Episode 2 of Westworld was also when viewers got to see Teddy randomly shot by one of the human participants. So, it seems with his repair he is also getting a new story to play out in Westworld. While it says his backstory has changed, it is unclear whether this means he will also be playing a new character entirely or if he will still be the same Teddy we have know so far in Westworld.

Interesting to see is that at the same time Teddy is getting a backstory change in Episode 3, his partnered host, Dolores is left alone. Considering she caught William’s eye in Episode 2 of Westworld, could she become more involved in him in Episode 3? The last sentence in the Episode 3 synopsis seems to indicate as such.

Finally, it seems like Bernard will continue delving into that anomaly that occurred with the revelries update back in Episode 1 of Westworld. The revelries update created more lifelike characteristics within the hosts, but, for some, it was just too much. Dolores’ father, for example, had to be retired on account of his reaction to the update. Dolores, on the other hand, also experienced what appeared to be an enhanced intelligence but has managed to keep it under wraps so far. While viewers like to think the revelries anomaly is creating smarter hosts, the synopsis suggests Bernard might believe there is a reason for the madness and hallucinations rather than advanced intelligence.

While no official trailer video has been released for Episode 3 of Westworld, the trailer above was issued by HBO and features scenes from upcoming episodes in Westworld. This video confirms the hosts certainly are becoming smarter with Maeve seeming to have flashbacks when a child drops a toy. Bernard also confirms the hosts are able to access fragments of previous builds, although this is likely only with the small percentage that have received the revelry update.

The clip also shows just how quickly William is falling for Dolores and has to be reminded by his friend that Westworld “seduces everyone,” after William declares Dolores is not like the others. Except that William is probably right in that regard, Dolores really is different to the others at the moment.

At the very end of the clip, viewers also get a tease of the maze that has only been seen so far on the scalp the Man in Black has been carrying around.
