Bullying caught on tape

Brunswick, MD – A TV station scheduled an interview with a high school sophomore on the subject of bullying, but were interrupted when the bullies decided to attack the young man as cameras rolled.

Preston Deener was set to speak out on the subject of bullying when he was approached by a trio of bullies and assaulted. Your4State caught the incident on camera, as Deener fled the interview, heading back to school property.

“The student came up to me and pushed me out of the way and said ‘What are you recording?’ ” Preston said. “All of sudden, the student was chasing me and I needed some help.”

Deener fought back against his attackers in an incident last week, and was suspended for three days. The local news station has turned over the video of the attack to school officials, hoping that Deener can get some justice from the administration, notes MSN. His mother, Cheryl Deener, is also calling on the school to take action against her son’s bully in light of the video tape.

“I’m hoping now that they take this more seriously than what they have,” she said.

The school says that they are launching a full investigation into the incident and attempting to identify the students in the tape.

“A full investigation is step number one, to find out whats going on and what happened,” said Michael Doerrer of the Frederick County Public Schools.

Preston says that he has been bullied for years, and that he has also experienced cyber-bullying on social media sites like Twitter.

“Preston is very strong but I think he’s a little bit shaken up with what happened today,” his mother said. “You’ve got to have one heart and stand up for someone who’s getting bullied and it needs to stop.”

The station didn’t show the video of the attack, but the news report that was broadcast does show the aftermath as well as the ultimate interview with Deener. We have to hand it to this Deener kid, he’s got some guts.

  1. For some reason or another bullying is an awful rite of passage for many school children, whether it stems from the aggressor's belittled sense of self, a misunderstanding of the individual being bullied simply for being different, a dysfunctional family upbringing, a blind eye by teachers at school or the excesses of society that so often congratulates and holds violence in such high esteem, or perhaps worse it could all just come down to the fact that it's man's nature to be combative and hostile….

Please call the school at 240-236-8600 and leave a message about how you feel they should react. That student needs to be turned around now about what he thinks is acceptable behavior. Maybe home schooling would be best.
