Roddick, Tsonga Into Third Round At U.S. Open, Pennetta, Hantuchova Triumph

Flushing Meadows, NY (AHN) – Fifth-seeded American Andy Roddick powered his way into the third round of the U.S. Open with a late-night win Thursday over Frenchman Marc Gicquel 6-1, 6-4, 6-4.
Roddick, who lost an epic Wimbledon final to eventual champion Roger Federer, forged a third round bout with countryman John Isner, who ousted Turkey’s Marsel Ilhan 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1).
On Friday, seventh-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga also punched a third round ticket after thumping Jarkko Nieminen 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.
Sixteenth seeded Marin Cilic rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the fifth set to dispose of Jesse Levine 4-6, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3, 6-0 and advance into the third stage.
Other second round winners include Julien Benneteau, who scored a mild upset against 30th seed Viktor Troicki 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0, while No. 24 seed Juan Carlos Ferrero held on to oust Philipp Petzschner 1-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4.
While in women’s play, tenth-seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta demolished Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada 6-1, 6-1 on Friday.
The surging Italian, who has maintained her recent strong plays, will face in the fourth round either seventh-seeded Vera Zvonareva or Elena Vesnina, who play later today.
Also advancing into the fourth stage was No. 22 seed Daniela Hantuchova, who plastered rising American Vania King in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
Other top women slated to play on Friday include second seed and defending champ Serena Williams, who took the first set at 6-3 over Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez.
Opening the night session is third seed Venus Williams vs. Magdalena Rybarikova.
Eighth-seed Victoria Azarenka will also see action against No. 26 seed Francesca Schiavone.
