Ernie Harwell has cancer

As a life long Detroit Tigers fan this is about the worst news I could have awoken to today. Long time voice of the Tigers, and Hall of Fame MLB Broadcaster Ernie Harwell has inoperable Bile Duct cancer. Harwell is 91 years old, and a beloved figure not only here in Detroit but throughout the world of Major League Baseball.

First and foremost I must wish Ernie all the best wishes, and to let him know that he will be in my thoughts and prayers in the coming weeks. I would also like to extend my blessings to his family as they battle through this illness.

I could never count how many times in my youth I listened to Harwell call a Detroit Tigers game. I could never count how many times I fell asleep listening to Harwell on the radio broadcasting a Tigers game, or how many times traveling up to the Northern parts of Michigan I listened to Harwell until the channel began to fade. I always felt a little sad when the car finally left the broadcast range of Harwell calling a Tigers game.

Now I would like to thank Harwell for teaching me about baseball, for being a excellent broadcaster, and for many years being the Voice of my Detroit Tigers. The game isn’t the same without him, and since the day he steeped away from calling Tigers games they have never quite been the same.
