Man Robs Bank For $1 To Earn Jail Sentence

A man in Pennsylvania robbed a bank for $1 in order to win some time in prison.

According to the NY Daily News, Jeffrey McMullen, 50, was a regular customer of an AmeriServ bank in Northern Cambria. On Friday, McMullen entered the bank and handed two notes to the tellers demanding that they hand over a single dollar bill.

The Associated Press reports that one note demanded payment of $1 and the other made a request to be taken into federal custody.

The first note read: “Federal bank robbery. Please hand over $1.00.”

The second note read: “FBI custody. Preferably Loretto Pa. No press. Seal all files.”

The Tribune Democrat reports that the two tellers initially thought that McMullen was joking. A third employee handed the man a dollar and called the police. McMullen said that he would wait for their arrival.

The $1 bank robber was arraigned before District Judge Michael Zungali. Zungali ordered that McMullen would have to undergo a mental exam and post $50,000 bond before being released from prison. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for later this week.

McMullen has no past criminal record.
